Hailee Steinfeld wants you to get high . . . we mean, hy — as in, Nexxus’s new Hy Volume collection. On the 22nd story of The Peninsula Hotel in NYC, Steinfeld was pretty high herself, energetically speaking. Dressed in a lilac sweater to match the color of the product packaging and sporting a bouncy blowout parted to the side, the actor appeared to be floating. (The fluffy, cotton-batting clouds scattered around her as decoration certainly helped.)
There are a few likely sources behind Steinfeld’s ethereal energy. For one, she’s built up quite the tolerance to the fanfare of stardom, having been in the entertainment scene since 14 with films like “True Grit,” “The Edge of 17,” and “Dickinson.” Two, she’s set to get married soon to Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen, which is certainly responsible for some of that glow she’s got going on. Another thing helping her feel light as air right now? Unplugging.
“I’ve really had to work on disconnecting and resting,” she says. “That goes so hand in hand with every other part of my wellness routine.” As a self-proclaimed “workhorse” with an ever-evolving schedule, she tries to make time for herself whenever possible. “I’ve gotten really good at accepting if all I have in that one moment is two minutes, I will take it and make the most of it.”
When she only has minutes, that means getting outside or calling a loved one (although it’s a bonus when she can habit stack and do both at the same time). Otherwise, her morning routine plays a big part in keeping her grounded. She loves slow mornings. “I don’t love getting up early to work out, but I love to challenge my mind and my body somehow, some way, every day. That’s non-negotiable.” Her goal is at least 15 minutes. “It really does change my whole mood; I’m going to feel better about myself. I’m going to feel recharged and ready to take on another day.”
While she follows the “less is more” approach when it comes to her wellness habits — you will not see her posting any “5-to-9 before my 9-5 videos” here — her beauty routine is really where things get playful. That’s evident in the (cheeky) clip she created for the Nexxus Hy Volume collection, consisting of the Hy-Volume Weightless Lift Shampoo, Conditioner, and Styling Foam ($48 for the set). “This campaign is all about going as big and bold as possible with your hair, but also matching your level of confidence to that same volume.”

In the video, Steinfeld struts around with a larger-than-life blowout that rivals that of Dolly Parton and Cindy Crawford put together. “You get a little crazy with your blow dryer and some rollers, and magic happens,” she says.
This partnership with the drugstore hair-care brand has been a long time coming. “Nexxus has been in my life, in and around my life, for what it feels like forever,” she says. Like many of us, she grew up using Nexxus shampoo and conditioner. Though a lot has changed since then, her love for the brand is unwavering.
As great as her style in the “Get Hy” campaign was, it’s quite the departure from the look she has at the time of our interview. Steinfeld’s long hair is chopped into a short bob haircut. “Cutting my hair was big on the board of ‘could-do-wanna-do-but-maybe-not-because-I’m-scared,'” she says, until finally, she said, “OK, let’s just do it.”
No matter what look she’s experimenting with at any given moment, she always has the same beauty advice in the back of her mind: Embrace your natural beauty. Is it a little corny? Yes, but she feels it’s the best way to reach inner and outer confidence. “Letting your inner beauty shine through and finding confidence within yourself will make any and every makeup look and hairstyle just that much greater,” she says.
But who says you can’t embrace what you were born with with a little bit of color cosmetics — which is exactly what she likes to do with the beauty marks on her face. As a lesser-known hack, Steinfeld loves to draw over them with eyeliner or lip liner (whatever she has on hand) to make sure they’re not hidden from view when she’s wearing heavier makeup.
You’ll likely spot plenty of fan-favorites in Steinfeld’s beauty routine. Every morning and night, she washes her face with the Christie Kidd Clean Natural Facial Cleanser ($34). “That has been tried and true; it just gets all my makeup off, leaves me going to bed with that bare face that feels clean.” Other favorites include the Kosas Concealer ($32), Armani Eyes to Kill Mascara ($35), Patrick Ta Blush ($38) “in just about any shade because they’re all perfection,” and the Make Up For Ever Whatever Walnut Lip Liner ($24). Though it’s not an everyday thing, she’s recently gotten into LED light therapy after being gifted a mask. “I’ve used the little handheld thing forever, which I love, but I’m very excited to put that mask on,” she says.

“Life is going to take you down roads that you have planned, have not planned, want to go down, don’t want to go down, but just embrace it for all that it is and be kind to yourself throughout.”
There are always three items in her bag at all times: a spooly to brush her brows, a travel-size dry shampoo, and the Neutrogena Collagen Bank SPF ($19) — another brand she’s partnered with in the past.

All that said, there’s one thing more effective and potent than any morning routine or beauty product, and that’s prioritizing mental health. “I love to work; that runs in my family, that’s in my blood. I’m so grateful that I get to do something that I love so much that really doesn’t feel like work all that much a lot of the time,” she says. “But because it’s something that I care so deeply about and is so easy to just get caught up in.”
Her body usually signals to her that it’s time to take a break. “I’ve learned so much about myself and my limits and what makes me truly happy.” Her biggest tip, whether you’re juggling a jam-packed Hollywood schedule or a traditional 9-5, is to learn to prioritize what’s the most important to you and to have patience — with yourself and life. “Life is going to take you down roads that you have planned, have not planned, want to go down, don’t want to go down, but just embrace it for all that it is and be kind to yourself throughout.”
