A former California therapist has been charged with multiple felonies after she allegedly groomed and sexually abused a teen.

Sofia Drotts, 26, is charged with two counts of unlawful sexual intercourse, two counts of oral copulation of a person under 18 years of age, one count of sexual penetration by a foreign object, two counts of sending harmful matter to a minor and one count of possession of child or youth pornography, Contra Costa District Attorney’s Office announced on Monday, July 27.

Drotts is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday, July 29.

According to prosecutors, Drotts was employed as a behavioral health clinician at the John Davis Juvenile Detention Center in Martinez when she was assigned to the teen.

Prosecutors allege the sexual acts occurred after the teen left the facility.

“After John Doe is released from detention, he and Drotts engage in a sexual relationship between April 1, 2026, and July 14, 2026,” prosecutors said.

Drotts was taken into custody by the Concord Police Department after they received a tip from a supervisor at the Contra Costa County Probation Department.

“After a thorough investigation, Concord Police arrest Drotts on July 14th, and referred the case to the District Attorney about a week later for a charging decision,” according to prosecutors.

On Monday, July 27, the family of the teen filed a claim against Contra Costa County, Contra Costa Health and others, alleging the agencies failed to protect the boy from the abuse, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

Drotts allegedly began grooming the boy when he was 14 years old in 2024, according to the Chronicle, citing the claim.

“During the two years in which Doe was incarcerated at the juvenile Hall, Drotts abused her position as his therapist to establish an inappropriate emotional connection with DOE, ‘grooming’ him with the objective of sexual abuse,” the claim states, NBC Bay Area reported.

The teen was serving a two-year sentence in Contra Costa County Juvenile Hall, according to the Chronicle.

According to the claim, after the boy was released, he would ignore curfew and stay overnight at times at Drotts’ San Francisco home, the Chronicle reported.

“We trusted these professionals with our son’s healing and that trust was betrayed and fundamentally shattered,” the teen’s mom Sage Moala said in a statement, the San Jose Mercury News reported. “Our focus is on our son’s recovery and protection.”

Contra Costa Health said in a statement to PEOPLE that they were “aware of the claim filed against the County involving a former temporary employee and allegations involving a minor. Because this is an active legal and personnel matter, Contra Costa Health cannot provide additional comment at this time.”

Drotts could not be reached for comment.
