Some of Australia’s most influential bands first found their footing on university stages. From The Whitlams and Grinspoon to Ball Park Music, The Cat Empire and TISM, campuses have long served as incubators for emerging artists before they broke onto national stages. The newly launched Campus Revival Tour aims to reconnect with that tradition, bringing free live music back to universities while creating paid opportunities for the next generation of Australian musicians.

Created by QUT’s student-led Vermilion Records and supported by Creative Australia, the four-part interstate initiative is about more than a run of gigs. Running from 2026 to 2028, the project seeks to strengthen the relationship between higher education and Australia’s live music sector by giving emerging artists paid touring experience while allowing students to gain practical industry skills in event management, production, promotion and artist liaison.

Leading the inaugural tour is Melbourne indie-pop artist Serendipiti, whose debut EP idealist introduced her expansive songwriting to a growing audience earlier this year. The tour also coincides with the release of the deluxe edition, idealist (realist), as Serendipiti continues to build on appearances at BIGSOUND and support slots alongside Thelma Plum, Infinity Song, Jem Cassar-Daley and Kyle Lionheart.

Each stop will also spotlight local talent, with Jacinta Drumond and Lemonise joining the Sydney bill at Manning Bar, while Moon Boots and The Ra Ta Tas perform in Brisbane. In Wollongong, the tour partners with The Jam, the University of Wollongong’s student music competition, giving finalists the opportunity to perform before Serendipiti closes the night.

Associate Professor Kristina Kelman, founder of Vermilion Records and the project’s lead, says the initiative responds directly to the challenges facing Australia’s live music ecosystem.

“Universities have produced some of this country’s finest artists, but that pipeline doesn’t sustain itself. If we want a live music industry in ten years, we have to invest in where it starts, on campus, with real gigs, real audiences and real stakes for everyone involved.”

At a time when venue closures and rising costs continue to reshape Australia’s grassroots music landscape, the Campus Revival Tour offers a practical model for nurturing both artists and future industry professionals. Rather than simply recreating the past, it asks what role universities can play in sustaining live music for the years ahead.
