After a 17-year recording hiatus, Pinky Beecroft is back, and he is taking his new album Lonesome Wolf around Australia this August and September for a national album launch tour.

Pinky Beecroft & Friends will play shows across the country, including rare appearances in Fremantle and Adelaide, with the tour promising a set that reaches well beyond the new record. Alongside material from Lonesome Wolf, Beecroft will dig into his extensive back catalogue, including favourites from his years fronting Machine Gun Fellatio.

The tour accompanies the release of Lonesome Wolf, Beecroft’s first album in 17 years and a record that finds him operating a considerable distance from the unruly pop-rock associated with some of his best-known work.

Recorded and produced in Melbourne with Damian Cafarella of The Pleasures and The White Russians, the album draws together soul, country twang and understated late-night songwriting. Beecroft handles vocals, piano, Rhodes and Mellotron, while Cafarella contributes guitars, bass, banjo, drums, percussion and keyboards.

Everything was recorded live in one room, with the pair deliberately resisting the temptation to fill every available space.

The album includes recent singles ‘Band Of Gold’, featuring Queenie, and ‘I’ll Be Alright’, alongside Beecroft’s interpretation of the Ben Salter-penned ‘My Heart Is In The Wrong Place’.

There is also a bridge back to Beecroft’s past in the form of a new version of Machine Gun Fellatio favourite ‘Unsent Letter’, featuring Gabrielle Parker on backing vocals. Queenie appears again on a distinctive interpretation of The Rolling Stones’ ‘Wild Horses’.

For Beecroft, returning to recording after such a lengthy absence wasn’t prompted by the need to manufacture a comeback. It was considerably simpler: he finally made an album he wanted to release.

“Why now? Well, because I just made a record that I love,” he says. “This one feels very different. It’s the record I’ve wanted to make, for a long time.”

That makes the upcoming tour particularly intriguing. It isn’t simply a chance to hear Beecroft revisit the songs people already know. Instead, audiences will get a rare meeting of the intimate new world of Lonesome Wolf and the sprawling catalogue that preceded it.

After 17 years between albums, Pinky Beecroft is not just putting out another record. He is getting back on the road, opening up the catalogue and taking the whole story with him.
