The voices behind Elsa, Anna and Olaf reunited to present ‘Frozen 3’ at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event on Aug. 14 — 13 years after the original film premiered

Summer may be heating up, but Elsa, Anna and Olaf brought some Frozen magic to Anaheim.

On Friday, Aug. 14, Idina Menzel, Kristen Bell and Josh Gad reunited at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event to preview Frozen 3, bringing the voices behind Elsa, Anna and Olaf, respectively, back into the spotlight ahead of the film’s 2027 theatrical release. 

Despite a technical malfunction, Bell, 46, and Menzel, 55, sang a song seemingly from the new film, before Gad, 45, joined them onstage and sang a new Olaf tune about being in love.

In an early look at the third installment of the hit animated franchise, the trio explained that Frozen 3 will show Anna and Kristoff (Jonathan Groff) getting married, as well as Olaf falling in love.

Bell, Menzel and Gad showed a teaser for the forthcoming movie at the event, before the night ended with snow confetti falling from the ceiling.

The Frozen reunion comes more than a decade after the original film became a global phenomenon, and nearly seven years after Frozen 2 continued the story of the sisters of Arendelle.

Menzel will reprise her role as Elsa, while Bell will once again voice Anna. Gad is returning as Olaf, and Groff, 41, is also back as Kristoff. 

Gad began recording his dialogue for the third movie in February. At the time, he shared a photo from Disney Animation Studios with directors Jennifer Lee and Trent Corey and producer Christina Chen.

He wrote in the caption of his Instagram post: “3rd time is always the charm ☃️ Time to build another snowman.”

The original Frozen followed Anna as she set out to find Elsa after the newly crowned queen accidentally plunged their home of Arendelle into an eternal winter. Along the way, Anna teamed up with Kristoff, his reindeer Sven and snowman Olaf, leading to a collection of songs that quickly became Disney staples, including “Let It Go,” “Do You Want to Build a Snowman?” and “For the First Time in Forever.”

Six years later, Frozen 2 took the story beyond Arendelle, as Anna, Elsa, Olaf and Kristoff traveled into an enchanted forest to uncover the source of Elsa’s powers and learn more about their family’s past.

Lee, who co-directed the first two films, is returning for the third installment as an executive producer and co-writer. In 2023, she teased just how excited she was about the story taking shape.

“Every morning last week they carved out space for me to work with the creative team on it, and I am blown away and I am so excited,” Lee, 54, told Variety at the time.

The original Frozen songwriting team is also returning, as Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez are back for the third installment. The married songwriting duo won an Oscar for “Let It Go,” and they also earned a nomination for Frozen 2‘s “Into the Unknown.”

And Frozen 3 isn’t the end of the road for the franchise. Disney has confirmed that Frozen 4 is also in development, though a release date has not yet been announced.

D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event takes place from Aug. 14 to Aug. 16 in California, bringing Disney fans together for a weekend filled with news, previews and plenty of familiar faces.

Frozen 3 will be released in theaters on Nov. 24, 2027.
