The family of an 8-year-old boy who died after being struck by a falling tree at camp has come forward and identified him as Mason Sundberg.

The Sudbury Police Department (SPD) shared the update identifying Sundberg on Thursday, Aug. 20, confirming he died from his injuries. “Today, our Sudbury community is grieving the heartbreaking loss of one of our youngest residents,” the statement began. “Words cannot fully express the sorrow so many are feeling, and we understand how difficult it can be to help children process the unimaginable loss of a friend or classmate.”

SPD shared that they are working closely with Sudbury Public Schools to “provide support and resources to students, families, and community members as we navigate this difficult time together.”

The police reposted a statement from Sundberg’s family, including several photos of him spending time outdoors and with his dog.

“A perfect son, grandson, nephew, and cousin – he loved his family more than anything (and his dog River),” the Sundberg family wrote, describing the 8-year-old as “funny, goofy and crazy in all the right ways.”

“He will be remembered for singing and dancing around the house with a wide smile on his face and a skip in his step,” the statement from the family continued.

“Mason loved video games, good sushi, swimming, skiing, running everywhere, and a good holiday celebration with over the top decorations,” his family described. “He loved to draw and build stories with his friends, a notebook in his bag everywhere he went. His brightness will be missed, but never forgotten to those who loved him.”

The family thanked the community for their condolences, and said they would be sharing details pertaining to memorial services soon.

Wayland Fire and Police Departments confirmed on Tuesday, Aug. 19 that first responders arrived to find a child suffering from “life-threatening injuries” at YMCA Camp Chickami in Wayland, Mass. at approximately 10:40 a.m.

“It was a large tree that took down another tree, and it was kind of a domino effect that set off the whole thing,” Mark Hebert, Wayland’s acting police chief, said, WCVB reported.

Jack Fucci, president and CEO of the West Suburban YMCA, which operates the summer day camp where the tragic accident occurred, told NBC Boston that grief counseling will be available for fellow campers and staff at Camp Chickami, which will be closed for the season.

“In light of the heartbreaking tragedy that occurred on Tuesday, and in consultation with families and many members of the camp staff, we have made the decision to close Camp Chickami for the remainder of the season,” Fucci said in a statement, per the outlet. “We are taking this step out of respect for the family of the camper who passed away and the well-being of our camping community. Camp had been scheduled to end on September 4.”
