  • Local fishermen rescued a dog swimming alone a mile from shore near Cedros Island, Mexico
  • The fishermen gave the dog water, food, and rest before safely returning it to shore
  • Someone on the dock recognized the dog and helped reunite it with its owner

One dog decided to take an extended swim out in the Pacific Ocean, leaving it stranded far from shore.

In a shocking video obtained by Storyful, captured Tuesday, Aug. 4, local fishermen help a pup paddling through choppy waves off Cedros Island, Mexico.

Arturo Chacon, the owner of Tag Cabo Sportfishing, captured the footage of the dog keeping its head above water and can be heard saying behind the camera, “We just found a dog far away from shore, what the heck.”

“Look how far we are from the beach,” he adds, panning back to show the shoreline.

In the clip, the boaters whistle and call to the dog before one fisherman reaches overboard, lifts the dog by the scruff of its neck, and hauls it back onto the deck.

The dog lies down, seemingly unfazed, as the fishermen take the canine safely back to shore.

“What’s up, bud?” one fisherman is heard asking. “Welcome aboard.”

The 11 fishermen had been traveling with Cedros Outdoors Adventures when the shocking moment occurred. At first, Chacon thought the boat’s captain had seen a sea lion when he pointed out the dog, but he quickly turned around and came across the pup, Wired2Fish reported.

The outlet also said the dog was about one mile from shore when the boat picked it up. The crew gave the rescued dog fresh water and let it rest while they fished. Gradually, the pup’s condition improved.

The crew also gave him part of a burrito they’d packed as a treat.

“He was definitely hungry,” Chacon told Wired2Fish.

The fishermen credited the dog with being their good luck charm as they caught plenty of fish once the canine was aboard.

The rescue mission ended happily when someone on the dock recognized the dog as the fishing boat returned to shore. The person who knew the dog reunited it with its owner.

The fishermen don’t know what led the dog so far out to sea, but they’re glad they could step in and save the day.
