I’ve learned the hard way that not every fall fashion trend works with my 5-foot-4-inch frame, especially when it comes to sweaters.

Over the years, I’ve hoarded knitwear, but a lot of my fall sweaters are beginning to feel dated. Since cooler weather is just around the corner, I figured now is as good a time as any to update my sweater collection. This season, I’m swapping old, frumpy cardigans and pullovers for trends like polos and short-sleeve sweaters that are better suited for my petite frame. As much as I love to wrap myself in a blanket-like cardigan, they don’t always look polished. Oversized sweaters tend to swallow my petite frame, so I’m sticking to slimmer silhouettes. The cardigans I’m shopping for all have a slightly cropped hem with a close-fitting look. They’re easy to style, too, and can be worn layered over T-shirts or all buttoned up as a top.

The next time you’re tempted to throw on a big crewneck sweater and call it a day, reach for a knit with a waist detail instead. Wrap sweaters or a knit with a cinched-in waist work well on shorter torsos. If you’re petite but hate cropped hems, a waist-detail sweater can have a similar flattering effect without having to show too much skin. 

A wrap sweater like this Zesica find is one current silhouette I’m missing for fall. I love its pretty side-tie detail and its office-friendly V-neckline, which includes a hidden button so you can easily adjust the coverage. Sweater vests are tricky to shop for: Pick one that’s too oversized, and it’s impossible to style; if you choose one that’s too small, you may look juvenile. Instead, I’m taking the guesswork out of the equation with simple short-sleeve sweaters. They essentially double as your favorite T-shirt but offer a more refined look thanks to their knitted fabrics. 

I’ll be picking up this Rumia sweater in multiple colors for fall. Its sleek, relaxed fit will be easy to style with everything from jeans to long skirts. It’s earned a stamp of approval from petite shoppers, too. Sweater dresses are hit-or-miss on my petite frame. Most of the time, they end up being too long or too frumpy, so this year I’m trying out sweater sets instead. A skirt with a mid-to-high rise means I can slightly tuck in my top for a waist-cinching effect, while a midi length tends to give a leg-lengthening effect with knee-high boots. 

I added this Saodimallsu set to my cart the moment I spotted it. With its rich chocolate brown color and fringe hem, I think it looks much more expensive than its price. I’m also a fan of the two side slits on the skirt, which allow for better movement. This matching set can be dressed up or down, too. I’d pair it with sleek loafers and socks for the office or go with kitten heels or boots for a nighttime event.
