Alan Ritchson quietly filed for divorce nine months before publicly announcing that he and his wife Catherine broke up.

Alan, 43, and Catherine, 37, shared the news of their separation in a joint Instagram post on Saturday, Sept. 12. “After twenty years together, Cat and I have decided to end our marriage and continue alongside one another in a different way,” they wrote in a lengthy statement.

Nine months earlier, the Reacher star filed for divorce on Dec. 1, 2025, according to court records obtained by PEOPLE, after 19 years of marriage.

The high school sweethearts share sons Calem, 13, Edan, 12, and Amory, 10, and wrote in their post that their kids “will always be the center of our world.”

“Nothing can diminish what these years have meant to us — or the love and respect we will always share,” the statement continued. “The best gift we can give one another — and our boys — right now is friendship, grace and a commitment to becoming the strongest co-parents we can be.”

“We also want to give each other room to grow into the people we are becoming,” the statement said.

“Change is hard enough without the whole world weighing in. We hope, especially for the sake of our boys, that you will allow our family to move through this chapter with privacy and compassion. Thank you for supporting us as we continue making the health and happiness of our family our priority.”

At the New York City premiere of Motor City in July, Alan was joined by Catherine and their sons, but he was not wearing his wedding ring.

He also did not post on his wedding anniversary this year. In 2025, he celebrated both their anniversary and Mother’s Day in a post as he called himself “the luckiest man alive.”

“To be able to build the treasure that is our marriage and family is and always will be the greatest privilege and success of my life,” he wrote. Describing Catherine as “wisdom personified” and “strength incarnate,” Alan wrote, “The boys and I are so beyond blessed to be able to journey with and for you. Happy Mother’s Day/19th Wedding anniversary momma. You deserve to be revered and celebrated forever and always.”
