Thirty-one years ago, Shania Twain wondered just who her cheating lover was spending time with in the hit single “Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under?” Now, thanks to Kane Brown, she’s finally got her answer!

The country stars have teamed up on the new single “Boots,” which twists Twain’s original song on its head and answers the titular question from the perspective of the lover himself — and as it turns out, it’s not what you think.

“I think it’s very well done in the sense that it’s kind of like a call and response, a continuation of the story,” Twain, 61, tells PEOPLE. “Lyrically, the intention was to make it playful and not offensive from the woman’s point of view. And I think [Brown] doing it in the same spirit was the right thing.”

The “You’re Still the One” singer co-wrote the original song, which was released in 1995 on her breakthrough album The Woman in Me. “Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under?” was a song Brown, 32, grew up listening to — so when songwriter Josh Hoge sent him “Boots,” in which the man in the song insists that there is in fact no other woman, it was a no-brainer.

“I’ve been a fan of the Queen for the longest [time]. My mom was a huge fan, and I was a massive fan growing up, [being] raised by all women. So we heard Shania all the time in my house,” he tells PEOPLE. “I listened to [‘Boots’] and immediately just fell in love with the song. And then I just kind of tried to manifest Shania allowing us to do the song and getting her on the song.”

Luckily for Brown, getting Twain on board wasn’t all that difficult. The two first met years ago at an awards show, and when she hosted the ACM Awards in May, Brown — who performed at the show — knew it was his perfect window.

“I said, ‘You know what? I’m going to meet her again. She’s going to say that we can do the song,’” he recalls thinking. “And then she one-upped me and said she was going to hop on the song with me. So I was like, ‘Hell yeah.’”

Sure, his manifestation worked its magic, but it helped that the Queen of Country Pop was already a fan.

“I was a really big supporter from the very, very beginning,” she says, talking to Brown. “You just have a great voice and a very steady, calm way about you that’s very attractive. You’re so likable and easy to meet, which is good. And your voice is incredible. I love your voice, and I loved your voice on the song, too.”

It’s not lost on the pair that through the original song and its new iteration, they’ve managed to bridge a gap between generations, some of whom adore Twain’s original, and others who have only ever heard Brown’s take.

“I just want to thank you for carrying the torch, Kane,” Twain says. “I’m a songwriter first, and the songwriting is so critical… It’s all about the story.”

Brown, meanwhile, sees a kindred spirit in Twain, as he recognizes that they’re both “not scared to get boxed in” when it comes to genre and the type of music they’re making.

It’s an attitude he’s taking with him as he works on his next record, which will follow last year’s The High Road.

“I’ve always kind of tried to cater to the wrong people. Is it country enough? Basically the people that aren’t going to buy my records or listen to my music anyway, and I’m just now kind of realizing that,” he says. “I’ve gotten away from the slow type songs, even though that’s what got me started. I just don’t like playing them live. I’m just more energetic running around. So there’s going to be a lot of uptempo, head-bopping type songs.”

Twain, meanwhile, is staying plenty busy, too. She released her seventh album Little Miss Twain in July, and announced a new deluxe version of the record earlier this week set for release on Oct. 9. She’s also set to narrate the audiobook of a new recorded edition of her bestselling memoir From This Moment On.

“It’s not difficult to keep me inspired. There’s so many new ideas surfacing constantly that my head spins. We’ll never exhaust chord progression options or possibilities. The scales are infinite, and the lyric combinations are infinite. I lose sleep over this stuff!” she says. “I’m really easy to inspire. So staying creative is easy for me, it’s like lighting a match. From the creative side of things, there’s always a flame burning.”
