Cindy Crawford spoke to PEOPLE about her pride over her kids’ love for one another in an interview just months before her son Presley Gerber’s death.  

Presley died at the age of 27 on Sunday, Sept. 20. According to Los Angeles County Medical Examiner records obtained by PEOPLE, the model died at a rehab facility. 

A representative for Presley’s mother, Crawford; father, Rande Gerber and sister, Kaia Gerber, told PEOPLE in a statement, “The family is asking for privacy during this very difficult and painful time.”

In a May interview with PEOPLE, Crawford reflected on working with her husband and two children for their partnership with Vuori for the clothing brand’s spring 2025 campaign.

“It was amazing,” Crawford told PEOPLE at the time. “I mean, obviously, we’ve done family pictures before, but being on a real shoot. I think my husband and I just had … First of all, we got to spend a day with our kids, which we love. But it was extra special.”

Crawford went on to say that when she and Rande, 64, weren’t shooting and they were just watching their kids shoot together, “we were so proud.” 

“It was like watching their interaction with each other. Nothing makes, I think, a parent prouder than when your kids like each other and love each other,” Crawford added at the time.

“And then I think they interviewed me and Presley together and Kaia and Rande together, just hearing what… It’s not often that you have that recorded and hear that, hearing what your kids have to say about you; if it’s good is so nice,” she continued. 

In the same interview, the supermodel also reflected on being an empty nester now her kids were older, sharing, “I think we’re enjoying this next chapter of our life where it can be about us as a couple again. I mean, of course, we’ll always be parents, our kids are always a priority. They just don’t need us as much as they did, so we can enjoy each other more.”

According to TMZ, an autopsy has yet to be completed following Presley’s death. 

Before his untimely death, the model had been open about his struggles with his mental health and substance abuse.

During an appearance on the Studio 22 podcast in 2023, he said, “Having struggled with mental health, depression and some other things that come along with that, I think that whether I help one person or a hundred people get out of that place that I was in at one point in my life, that’s all I need to do.”

“[Mental health] is an issue. It is such a big part of my life. It’s a 24/7 job, and there’s so much to it,” he continued. “That’s really what I want to do: help people, whether you’re depressed, you’re struggling with something that is having a negative effect on your body. I mean it could be anything, and there’s no judgment.”

Presley added, “I’ve seen a lot of stuff and I’ve learned a lot of things. What I hope I can do is have made the mistakes for some other people, so they don’t have to make the same mistakes that I made.”

In one of his final social media posts, Presley also opened up about undergoing psychedelic drug treatment for his addiction struggles.

He was charged with a DUI in December 2019, and in 2020, he got a tattoo on his face that read, “MISUNDERSTOOD.” The following year, he appeared to have had it removed.

A month before Presley’s death, his model and actress sister, Kaia, 25, made some rare comments to Vogue about how her family handled his journey with addiction. 

“When something like that happens in a family, it kind of levels everyone,” she said. “I think that’s also why I started to self-​identify as the easy one and never wanted to ask for help. Because it felt like too much to have two children who were needing.”
