Carrot Top is now out of the hospital a week after a suicide attempt, PEOPLE confirms.

A source close to the performer (né Scott Thompson) says he is home with his family and doing well.

According to police and court records reviewed by PEOPLE, he had tried to kill himself on the afternoon of Sept. 18 at his home; he was found near his pool in his backyard after calling a member of his team distraught.

He was subsequently hospitalized in critical condition.

The health update comes days after a rep for the comedian told PEOPLE he was “recovering in the hospital and is receiving the care and support he needs” on Sept. 18. “His family and those closest to him are deeply grateful for the concern, prayers and respectfully ask for privacy,” the rep added.

A source close to the stand-up star told PEOPLE that his circle had been “touched” by the “wave of well-wishes” he received from fans. Thompson’s long-running residency at the Luxor in Las Vegas remained on hiatus since his hospitalization, notably with his Sept. 18 show at the Atrium Showroom appearing to have been canceled across numerous ticketing sites on Friday, including Ticketmaster.

The comedian, known for his physical comedy and signature red hair, has headlined a long-running residency at the Luxor since 2005.

According to a court filing obtained by PEOPLE, Thompson “was hospitalized following a suicide attempt.”

In a statement on Sunday, a rep for Thompson told PEOPLE that he “remains hospitalized and under close medical care.”

“He is now awake, breathing on his own and continuing to improve, surrounded by his family and those closest to him. Humor has always been such an important part of who Scott is and how he connects with people, and that remains true today as he shares moments of humor with the medical staff caring for him,” the rep said. “Many messages from fans have been shared with Scott, including stories from people about how his comedy helped them through difficult periods in their own lives. Hearing those stories and feeling that support has meant a great deal to him during his recovery.”

The rep added, “Scott and his family remain deeply grateful for the extraordinary kindness and continue to ask that his privacy be respected.”
