Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are reprising their roles of Rick O’Connell and Evelyn Carnahan for ‘The Mummy 4’

Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz have officially suited up to film The Mummy 4.

In September 2026, the Oscar winners were photographed shooting scenes in costume. These photos mark the first time fans have seen both Fraser and Weisz in character since 2001’s The Mummy Returns.

Fraser previously teased that he’s looking forward to bringing the “band back together” and returning to some of the locations from the original films.

“Well, we’re gonna get the band back together — the only way to do it, right? So, we’re going to give the audience what they have been bothering all of us for for the last 20-whatever years,” Fraser said during a May 2026 appearance on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon.

It’s been nearly three decades since The Mummy premiered in 1999 — and made an unexpected splash at the box office, raking in more than $409 million globally, per Box Office Mojo. The Mummy was followed by The Mummy Returns (2001), which brought in an impressive $443 million worldwide, per Box Office Mojo. Fraser returned for a third film, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008); however, Weisz stepped away from the franchise due to scheduling conflicts.

The story follows Fraser’s daring adventurer Rick O’Connell and brilliant Egyptologist Evelyn Carnahan (Weisz) as they uncover the lost city of Hamunaptra. However, their expedition goes awry when they awaken Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo), a cursed high priest who was buried alive.

What will The Mummy 4 be about? 

No official plot details have been revealed for The Mummy 4. However, the third installment suggested to fans that Rick and Evelyn’s next expedition could lead them deep into Peru.

At the end of The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, Rick and Evelyn (Maria Bello in the third film), along with their son Alex (Luke Ford) and his love interest Lin (Isabella Leong), face off against Emperor Han — an ancient Chinese warlord who’s been resurrected with terrifying powers.

In a climactic battle at the Great Wall of China, the Emperor transforms into a three-headed dragon and unleashes an undead army. Thanks to Lin’s immortal mother, Zi Yuan (Michelle Yeoh), and a magical dagger that strips the Emperor of his immortality, Rick and Alex defeat him.

With the curse finally broken, Zi Yuan sacrifices her immortality so that Lin can live a normal life. The O’Connells decide to finally retire — though the film teases another adventure ahead, hinting that mummies have been discovered in Peru.

Who is in the cast of The Mummy 4? 

Fraser and Weisz have officially reprised their iconic roles as Rick and Evelyn O’Connell — and it probably didn’t take much convincing to get them back on board.

When GQ asked The Whale star in November 2022 about returning to the franchise, his answer came without hesitation. “Absolutely … that was great fun,” he said.

Weisz echoed Fraser’s enthusiasm in an April 2023 interview with Net-a-Porter.

“It’s beloved to me too,” she told the outlet. “Everybody in The Mummy was just brilliant, and it was just some alchemical thing in it, that it had charm, and charm is such a strange thing. It’s either there or it isn’t.”

In September 2026, both Fraser and Weisz were photographed filming in separate locations for The Mummy 4. Fraser was seen racing a vintage silver-and-red rocket car labeled EPSA for a 1957 speed trials sequence in Suffolk, England. Meanwhile, Weisz was photographed filming outside London’s British Museum in vintage clothing.

“What we’re gonna do is saddle back up, go back to the locations … I should probably stop talking like this before I give anything away,” Fraser told Fallon in May 2026. “However, I know that — please wish me luck. I’m doing my best to get this 57-year-old gear in shape.”

In addition to Fraser and Weisz, the cast will also feature the return of John Hannah, Oded Fehr and Kevin J. O’Connor, as well as newcomers Michael Johnston and Numan Acar.

Who is directing The Mummy 4? 

The Mummy 4 will be directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett.

Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett are two-thirds of the filmmaking collective Radio Silence, along with producer Chad Villella. They are best known for their work on horror films such as Ready or Not (2019), Scream (2022) and Scream VI (2023).

David Coggeshall — who is known for films like Prey (2019) and The Family Plan (2023) — has confirmed that he will write the screenplay.

“Cat’s out of the bag, I guess,” he wrote on X in response to a Deadline article in November 2025.

When will The Mummy 4 be released? 

The fourth Mummy movie was originally scheduled to hit theaters on May 19, 2028, but it’s since been moved up to Oct. 15, 2027.
