PEOPLE reached out to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office for comment, but did not immediately receive a response.
Mock did not speak before the court during her sentencing, but a statement from one of her relatives was read in court, per KWCH.
“I believe she should never see daylight again,” Sonya Kritzinger, Avers’ stepdaughter, said of Mock.
According to a Nov. 4, 2025 probable cause affidavit filed by a Wichita Police Department detective and obtained by PEOPLE, Mock allegedly called 911 dispatchers and told them that her “mother tried to kill her, so she stabbed her in return.”
When officers arrived, Mock was standing in the middle of the street in front of her mother’s home, KWCH reported. Avers was found lying in her bed with stab wounds and surrounded by kitchen knives.
“Next to Anita on the bed, [an officer] located multiple kitchen style knives and a cheese grater, laid out on a pillow,” the affidavit said. “All the utensils had blood on them…the top sheet had at least 12 holes in the top half of the sheet, consistent with those caused by a knife.”
Police said that Mock’s version of the events leading up to her mother’s death changed on more than one occasion.
Mock told officers that she went to her mother’s room to talk about an upcoming job interview with a television station and “saw her sharpening knives,” per the affidavit. She claimed that her mother then came after her with a knife, and stabbed her mother to “save herself.”
Avers’ husband Barry allegedly told officers that Mock moved in with them about four or five years prior because she had been laid off due to “an explosive situation involving alcohol.”

Barry said Mock suffered from mental health disorders, and “was originally diagnosed with bipolar disorder but was later revised to schizoaffective disorder,” the affidavit said.

Kritzinger said what was done to the 80-year-old “was so severe that I was denied even the most basic part of losing someone I love — the chance to see her one last time.”
Mock has 14 days to appeal her sentence; however, her legal team said they do not intend to file an appeal, KWCH reported.
