It’s taken nearly four decades, but Chapterhouse are finally coming to Australia. The British shoegaze pioneers have announced their first-ever Australian tour for February 2027, celebrating 35 years of their landmark debut album Whirlpool, which they’ll perform in full alongside selections from their back catalogue.

The tour kicks off at Brisbane’s Brightside Outdoors on February 26 before heading to Sydney’s Manning Bar on February 27 and Melbourne’s Corner Hotel on February 28. The band then cross the Tasman for an Auckland show at the Tuning Fork on March 5.

Formed in Reading in 1987, Chapterhouse emerged alongside Spacemen 3 before becoming one of the defining names in Britain’s early shoegaze movement. Their sound brought together psychedelic guitars, hypnotic rhythms and an increasingly adventurous relationship with electronic music, helping establish a blueprint that would influence generations of alternative bands.

Released in 1991, Whirlpool remains their defining statement. Created with contributions from Cocteau Twins guitarist Robin Guthrie, the album helped push shoegaze beyond its guitar-driven beginnings. Its standout single ‘Pearl’, featuring Slowdive’s Rachel Goswell, brought together dense guitars and hip-hop-influenced beats in a combination that still sounds remarkably fresh. Pitchfork later ranked Whirlpool at number 17 on its list of the greatest shoegaze albums.

Chapterhouse pushed further into electronic territory with 1993 follow-up Blood Music, a record that blurred the boundaries between indie rock and dance music long before those combinations became commonplace. But by 1995, the band had called it quits, leaving behind just two studio albums and a considerable influence.

A brief reunion in 2008, sparked by an appearance with electronic musician Ulrich Schnauss, eventually led to shows in Britain, North America and Japan. Now, Australian audiences finally get their chance to hear the band perform the record that helped define an entire movement.

For a group whose reputation rests on just two albums, Chapterhouse have left a remarkably long shadow. Hearing Whirlpool played from beginning to end in rooms as intimate as Manning Bar should make this belated Australian debut worth the wait.
