A bride-to-be whose marriage proposal was interrupted by a passerby’s racist outburst has received a free wedding dress from a local bridal boutique after the encounter went viral online.
Hayley Lugo received the gown from Saint Clark Bridal Suite, a bridal boutique in Monrovia, Calif. after owner Lisa Clark saw a video of the Oct. 2 incident at Crescent Bay Point Park in Laguna Beach, CBS News reported.
“I feel very blessed to be receiving the gown, and there are still a lot of kind people out there willing to help us despite what happened,” Hayley told the outlet. “It feels unbelievable… I’m ready to begin this journey with my fiancé, so it’s all just coming together.”
Hayley’s fiancé, Emmanuel Banuelos, had planned to propose at the oceanfront lookout, while her sister, Trinity Lugo, a videographer, prepared to record the moment from a concealed position.
In a video shared by Trinity, a woman walking her dog can be heard objecting to the setup, saying the park was for local residents to enjoy and that events were not allowed on the grass. Trinity responded calmly, acknowledging the woman’s concerns and promising they would leave.
The woman continued to complain, at one point saying, “It’s every single f——g weekend, I’m sick and tired of it,” before telling Trinity, “Tear it down. People can’t come here and picnic on the evening when they want to.”
As the couple approached the proposal setup, Trinity’s video showed the woman becoming increasingly agitated. When mariachi music began playing as part of the planned proposal, the woman turned back toward Trinity and said, “This isn’t Mexico either you motherf——s,” followed by, “Go back to Mexico!”
The woman then walked away, while Banuelos and Lugo continued with the proposal, according to the video.
“I could not believe that I was being told those words. At first I thought, you know, she was just a normal ‘Karen,’” Trinity told ABC7.
Trinity said she chose not to escalate the confrontation because she did not want to disrupt the proposal.
“Once the music starts playing is when she really snaps,” she told the outlet. “Through that video people have reached out to me saying that this same woman has tried to ruin proposals at that park and even would tell people that she’s going to call ICE on them.”
Banuelos told ABC7 that he chose the oceanfront location and included mariachi music because Hayley loves it.
“She, in fact, loves mariachi so I really wanted it there. She’s fallen in love with it,” Banuelos said.
Hayley became aware of the confrontation and was stunned when she later watched the video, which spread widely online. She said the woman’s comments felt like an attack beyond the couple themselves.
“It hurts a lot because it’s not just us there. She’s being mean to the whole Mexican culture, the whole Hispanic culture, like everyone’s felt it,” Lugo told ABC7.
“You can’t be doing this anymore. Like it’s not right. You never know like if you’re going to be in the next viral moment, like if you could take anything from this, you do not want to be this lady,” she added.

After seeing the viral video of Hayley’s interrupted proposal, Saint Clark Bridal Suite owner Clari decided to gift the bride-to-be a wedding gown, CBS News reported.
“We live in a world where people can be pretty hateful, so I wanted to make sure that she understood that the world is not full of hate, and there is still kindness, and if this is something I could for her, I wanted to do it,” Clark told CBS News.
Hayley expressed gratitude for the gesture.
“It’s amazing,” she told the outlet. “I’m so grateful.”
