Melbourne’s garage-rock underground is throwing another party, and this time Japan’s Angel Face are crashing it.

The Breadmakers are celebrating their 37th birthday with Half Baked #2, taking over both floors of The Gem for a night of garage punk, rock ‘n’ roll, DJs, free Japanese food and a few surprises. And with just 120 tickets available, this one’s going to be intimate.

Making their Australian debut, Tokyo’s Angel Face bring serious garage-punk credentials. Guitarist Fink cut his teeth in Japanese punk legends Teengenerate and Firestarter, while bassist Toyozo comes from The Fadeaways. Frontman Hercules is known for his unpredictable stage antics, sometimes performing handcuffed to the microphone, while drummer Rayco completes the lineup.

With two albums released through Slovenly Recordings and an appearance at Memphis’s Gonerfest behind them, Angel Face have built a reputation for gloriously unruly live shows. They’ll also be bringing a limited-edition Australia-only LP, Home To Roost, exclusively for the occasion.

The Breadmakers will kick off the downstairs action at 7pm, followed by a mystery band whose identity is being kept firmly under wraps. Upstairs, Homemade Space Machine will provide a dose of eerie, twang-heavy sounds, while New Zealand DJ John Fully Baked Baker keeps the records spinning between sets and into the early hours.

And this isn’t just about the music. Melbourne Japanese restaurant Chotto Motto will supply complimentary snacks, while every ticket holder gets to take home a free vinyl record or CD from a lucky dip.

The first Half Baked sold out in just three days, so anyone hoping to catch Angel Face’s first Australian appearance would be wise to move quickly.
