Arizona emo outfit Commoner are gearing up for the release of their debut album Former Self, dropping new single Passerby ahead of the record’s arrival on 13 November via Pure Noise Records.

Urgent and emotionally charged, Passerby tackles the things left unsaid. For vocalist Romin Mattison, the track is a personal message to someone no longer in his life, giving voice to feelings he never had the chance to express.

Produced by longtime collaborator Zach Tuch, Former Self explores growing older, changing relationships and the uncomfortable realisation that neither we nor the people around us remain the same.

The album follows previous single Breach, which the band viewed as a bridge between their earlier material and the direction they’re now taking. Where that track hinted at change, Former Self represents a clearer picture of Commoner’s evolving sound.

Across the record, the Phoenix band examine childhood, lost connections and the distance between who we once were and who we’ve become. It’s familiar territory for emo, but Commoner approach it with a focus on personal experience rather than grand statements.

With Passerby offering another glimpse of what’s to come, Commoner are preparing to introduce themselves properly with a debut album built around change, reflection and moving forward.

Former Self arrives on 13 November 2026 via Pure Noise Records.
