Mark Sanchez has reached an agreement to settle a civil lawsuit stemming from the 2025 incident in which he allegedly assaulted a truck driver and suffered stab wounds, The Athletic reported.

The agreement between Sanchez, 39, and Perry Tole, 69 at the time of the incident, has not been signed and is in principle, the outlet said.

Last month, Sanchez filed a motion to plead guilty in the related criminal case against him, in which prosecutors say he was the initial aggressor in a violent fight that happened in downtown Indianapolis in October 2025.

The former Jets quarterback and TV personality was seriously injured in the alleyway incident involving Tole, who told police he thought Sanchez was “trying to kill” him, and stabbed the athlete in self-defense.

Sanchez allegedly approached the door of Tole’s box truck and began talking to the driver in an alley between the Westin and Marriott hotels, the Indianapolis Star reported at the time, citing a police affidavit. Video of the incident showed the driver walking backwards away from the former quarterback, who followed him.

Officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were unable to determine who the victim was when they first arrived on the scene and found Sanchez suffering from “several stab wounds to his upper right torso area,” according to an affidavit of probable cause filed in the case and previously obtained by PEOPLE.

Sanchez was later arrested and charged with one felony count of battery resulting in bodily injury, and misdemeanor charges of unauthorized entry of a motor vehicle, public intoxication endangering the life of another and battery resulting in bodily injury.

It is not known which criminal charges Sanchez is set to plead guilty to in the hearing scheduled for next month, per The Athletic. PEOPLE has reached out to Sanchez’s lawyer for further information.

One month after the stabbing incident, Fox Sports parted ways with the broadcaster, who had worked for the network as an analyst since July 2021.
