A child is among two people who were killed after a vehicle drove through a youth soccer game in Kansas.
At around 3:25 p.m. local time on Saturday, Oct. 17, emergency services received reports of a “vehicle that had driven through a youth soccer game” at Stryker Sports Complex in Wichita, injuring multiple people, said Wichita Police Captain Aaron Moses at a press conference.
“Officers and paramedics arrived [at the] scene on a field on the west end of the complex where they saw community members and citizens rendering medical aid to those who were injured,” Moses said. “They also located a truck on the west side of the field. The driver was still with the vehicle, along with two juveniles.”
A 6-year-old boy and 35-year-old man from McPherson were pronounced dead at the scene. The victims were not related, Moses confirmed.
The driver, a 34-year-old woman from Garden City, remains in custody following the incident, Moses said in another press conference on Saturday. She is believed to have had a child who was playing soccer in the area, but not on the field [where] the incident occurred.
Moses confirmed that at least 11 people were transported to local hospitals with minor and severe injuries. These include a 5-year-old girl and boy, two 8-year-old boys, a 9-year-old girl and three women and two men aged between 28 and 68.
Stryker Sports Complex said in a statement on Facebook, “Due to a serious incident at Stryker Sports Complex, all events have been canceled until further notice. We ask that you keep all individuals and families affected in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”

The Kansas State High School Activities Association was holding its first girls flag football championship near the field at Stryker at the time of the incident, The Wichita Eagle reported.
The organization said in a statement on Facebook, “The KSHSAA extends our condolences to the families and teams impacted by the incident on a field adjacent to the flag football competition at Stryker Sports Complex Saturday.”
The KSHSAA has suspended its upcoming championship games following the incident.
The female driver has not been publicly identified amid the police’s ongoing investigation.
“We’re still working to determine how and why this happened,” Moses said in the press conference. He urged the public to share any videos they may have with the police.
The Wichita Police Department, Stryker Sports Complex and Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for further comment.
