Cooper suggests social media’s bias towards extremism, not Ed Davey’s leadership, explains limited attention Lib Dems are getting

When pressed again on concerns within the party about Ed Davey’s leadership, Daisy Cooper, the deputy party leader, admitted that there was “a huge degree of frustration” in the party about the amount of media coverage it gets. But she claimed that this was because social media favours extremists.

She said:

double quotation markWhat I would recognise is there is a huge degree of frustration that, at a time when we are the largest third party in our party’s history, that has happened at a time when parliament almost doesn’t matter at all in terms of changing the political weather.

It’s all about the algorithms, it’s about social media. That’s where a lot of the conversation is happening. And those algorithms are being designed, are often financed, in a way that rewards extreme positions.

Are we going to play in that paddling pool of extreme politics? No, we’re absolutely not. We’re going to stick to our values. We’re environmentalists, we’re internationalists, we are pro-business, we are pro-growth.

We’re not going to adopt an extreme position just to get the online clicks. And I think people will appreciate that.
