A retired New York City police detective has been arrested in connection with a fatal shooting on the George Washington Bridge.
Shortly after 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 20, officers from the NYPD responded to a 911 call about a male shot on the “outbound, upper-level roadway” of the George Washington Bridge, the department told PEOPLE in a statement.
Upon arrival, a 46-year-old male, identified as Koran Irvine, was discovered “unconscious and unresponsive” in the driver’s seat of his vehicle, according to the NYPD.
The NYPD told PEOPLE Irvine sustained a gunshot wound to the rear of the right shoulder and was transported to Englewood Hospital, where he was subsequently pronounced deceased.
Police initiated a search for the suspect, who was later identified as 62-year-old Victor Romero. He was taken into custody and charged with murder, the NYPD confirmed to PEOPLE on Wednesday, Oct. 21.
The department confirmed to PEOPLE that Romero is a former NYPD employee who has been retired for 25 years. He reportedly worked as a detective, according to the Associated Press.
The NYPD confirmed that the shooting “appears to be” connected to a road-rage incident, but that it will “be determined by investigators.”
Con Edison confirmed to PIX 11 and the Associated Press that Irvine was an employee of the energy company.
