A couple’s wedding night took an unexpected turn when a police officer pulled them over. What happened next was “unforgettable.”

“Of all the ways we could have ended our wedding night, this was certainly not one we saw coming,” bride Kara Lewis Webb tells PEOPLE.

She continues, “One thing for sure is, we will be telling this story for the rest of our lives.”

When Kara, 25, married West Webb, 33, at Ramble Creek in Athens, Tennessee, on Sunday, Oct. 11, it was “truly a fairy tale.”

“It could not have gone more perfect, and was everything we had hoped for,” the bride says.

The couple’s “perfect” day came to an end almost instantly after they hit the road to their honeymoon spot.

“Within five minutes, we saw the blue and red lights flashing in the rearview mirror,” Kara remembers. “Initially, I assumed we were getting pulled over for a missing headlight or maybe an issue with our tags. But no, apparently it was much worse.”

The police interaction was captured on video and posted by the bride on social media. The reel has amassed about 9 million views on Instagram, and features the dramatic onscreen text, “WE GOT PULLED OVER ON OUR WEDDING NIGHT.”

Kara added in the caption, “Well, that was unexpected 😅😭.”

In the clip, a police officer walks through the darkness with his flashlight over to West’s rolled down window. He asks him, “Have you ever been in California?” The groom responds, “Yes, I have.”

“Well, have you had a speeding ticket there that you never took care of?” the cop questions seriously. “Because I have a warrant for your arrest.”

The couple was so “confused.” Kara tells PEOPLE, “My heart sank. For a moment, I genuinely had no idea what was happening.”

Luckily, the nightmare was over almost as soon as it began as the cop smiled and revealed, “I’m kidding.”

“Oh, my gosh!” West said while laughing with Kara. “That was insane.”

The cop congratulated the newlyweds and told them to “be careful” and “slow down” before walking away.

Kara notes that the prank seemed especially “believable” because the officer referenced California, where she and West reside. The photographer, videographer and social media storyteller influencer points out that the cop “could have kept the prank going longer than he did,” but is thankful he “lightened the mood almost immediately.”

The couple says the unexpected moment added to an already unforgettable day, and that they’d love to take the police officer out to lunch if he’s up for it.
