Some Hollywood love stories have withstood the test of time, but not every celebrity marriage is written in the stars. And a handful of pop culture’s most famous unions have lasted less than a year.
The Last Song costars Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth dated on and off for nearly a decade before tying the knot in 2018. However, less than a year later, the two decided to call it quits.
Meanwhile, Kim Kardashian’s marriage to former NBA player Kris Humphries made headlines for only lasting 72 days in 2011. The reality TV mogul later admitted to feeling “pressure” leading up to the televised nuptials and admitted to handling their breakup “the wrong way.”
“I fully broke up with him in the worst way, and I couldn’t, I just didn’t know how to deal, I learned so much from it,” she reflected on the Keeping Up with the Kardashians reunion special in 2021.
Ahead, revisit seven high-profile celebrity marriages that lasted less than a year.

Britney Spears’ first marriage was also her shortest. In January 2004, she married fellow Kentwood, La. native and childhood friend Jason Alexander. She wore a black cropped shirt, a baseball cap and jeans for the ceremony at Las Vegas’s Little White Wedding Chapel.
Just 55 hours later, she filed for an annulment, with a source telling PEOPLE at the time that the wedding was “a joke that went too far.”
In her 2023 memoir The Woman in Me, the music icon wrote of the brief marriage: “People have asked me if I loved him. To be clear: he and I were not in love. I was just honestly very drunk — and probably, in a more general sense at that time in my life, very bored.”

Carmen Electra and Dennis Rodman met, began dating and wed in 1998. They married on Nov. 14, 1998, at Little Chapel of the Flowers in Las Vegas, but the NBA star filed for an annulment just nine days later.
“Carmen and Dennis spoke several days ago and mutually agreed (to end the marriage),” a spokeswoman for Electra said at the time. They later reconciled, but divorced in the spring of 1999.
A decade after their split, the model told PEOPLE, “My advice to anyone is to not get married in Vegas.”

Kardashian and Humphries tied the knot in a lavish ceremony on Aug. 20, 2011, after dating for less than a year.
However, three weeks after the four-hour special Kim’s Fairytale Wedding was broadcast on E!, and only 72 days into their marriage, Kardashian filed for divorce on Oct. 31, 2011.
“I had hoped this marriage was forever, but sometimes things don’t work out as planned,” Kardashian said in a statement. “We remain friends and wish each other the best.”
The exes reached a settlement in April 2013, and their divorce was finalized two months later. At the time, the reality star was already in a relationship with Kanye West and expecting their first child together.

After Presley’s death on Jan. 12, 2023, Cage said in a statement obtained by The Hollywood Reporter, “Lisa had the greatest laugh of anyone I ever met. She lit up every room, and I am heartbroken.”

One Tree Hill costars Sophia Bush and Chad Michael Murray began dating in 2003 and married in an oceanfront ceremony in April 2005. However, they separated after just five months of marriage, and their divorce was made final in December 2006.
In 2024, Murray told The Cut that he “was a baby,” while looking back on the relationship.
“I didn’t know up, down, left, right,” the actor said. “You move out there and you go, ‘Well, what am I supposed to do now? Get married? That’s exciting!’ ”
Though Bush has rarely commented on her former marriage, she did address the relationship in an October 2026 episode of Call Her Daddy.
“We were kids; we’re all adults; we’re all parents,” she told host Alex Cooper. “No harm, no foul. Wish you well. Praise the adult you are. Hope it’s mutual.”
Over a decade prior, the actress told Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live that she and Murray were “two stupid kids who had no business being in a relationship in the first place.”

Cyrus and Hemworth’s brief marriage was over a decade in the making. They met in 2009 while filming the Nicholas Sparks film adaptation The Last Song, and dated on and off before getting engaged in 2012, and later split again.
The former costars picked things up again romantically in 2016, eventually tying the knot in December 2018. However, their marriage was short-lived. A rep for the pair confirmed to PEOPLE in early August 2019 that the two had separated, with the Australian actor citing “irreconcilable differences” in his filing.
“Ever-evolving, changing as partners and individuals, they have decided this is what’s best while they both focus on themselves and careers. They still remain dedicated parents to all of their animals they share while lovingly taking this time apart. Please respect their process and privacy,” their rep said in a joint statement.
Their divorce was finalized on Jan. 28, 2020.

Elisabeth Moss and Fred Armisen: 8 Months

There was just a year between Elisabeth Moss and Fred Armisen meeting in October 2008 on the Saturday Night Live set and tying the knot on Oct. 25, 2009, at The Foundry in Long Island City, N.Y.
The actress later cited irreconcilable differences when she filed for divorce in September 2010, listing June 26 as the date of separation.
The Handmaid’s Tale star told Page Six in 2012, “One of the greatest things I heard someone say about him is, ‘He’s so great at doing impersonations. But the greatest impersonation he does is that of a normal person.’ To me, that sums it up.”
In a 2015 episode of WTF with Marc Maron, Armisen admitted to intimacy issues. “I get lost in fantasy a lot,” he said. “The fantasy of this person from Mad Men, you know, great actress. And then as a person is interesting … all of a sudden, it’s like a slide. Like, ‘This is great!’”
He added, “I have a problem with intimacy, where all of a sudden, there’s a real person there. It’s not the girl on Mad Men … It’s almost like an amnesia. It’s almost like waking up and going, ‘Where am I? Who is this person? Why is this person looking at me directly in the eye and having a conversation with me?’ ”
