One thing’s for certain: Kate Middleton just inspired me to revamp my entire fall closet.

While the Princess of Wales recently stunned in a gown and tiara, the outfits catching my eye are more casual — but no less sophisticated, of course. In the past month, she’s worn a host of autumnal staples like the perennially-iconic Fair Isle sweater, a tartan plaid maxi skirt, comfortable penny loafers, and brown skinny jeans.

Fair Isle makes an appearance every fall. I love Kate’s crewneck sweater with a statement-making yet understated pattern in rich brown and navy, which she paired with a green barn jacket and ruffled blouse. I’ll be copying the look at my next brunch with friends in this subtly-cropped alternative, which intersperses Fair Isle with an Aran-knit pattern across the chest. I’m envisioning it with wide-leg jeans and leather ankle boots.

Plaid Skirt

Elle costume designer Sara Byblow told me recently that plaid maxi skirts are majorly trending this fall, and I can’t wait to wear one just like Kate’s — especially since it has a slightly shorter, petite-friendly length. I’m loving the way she played with proportion, pairing a dark green tartan skirt with a black structured-shoulder blazer, white ruffled blouse, and black pumps — a look that works equally well for a day at the office as it does for an after-hours event. This one is only $31 but “much better both in quality and fabric feel than expected for the price,” according to one shopper.

I’ve been obsessed with penny loafers since the early ’90s, so Kate’s timeless pair is right up my alley. She teamed them with a plaid blazer, fitted black top, and black straight-leg pants, creating the perfect desk-to-dinner look. 

Podiatrists constantly recommend Cole Haan’s Stassi penny loafers to me, since they have cushioned footbeds and low stacked heels. In addition to black like Kate’s loafers, they come in a host of styles like color-blocked leather and chocolate brown suede.

Brown Skinny Jeans

Kate has been wearing skinny jeans for more than 20 years, and she’s especially a fan of chocolate brown styles, which she brings back every fall. She most recently wore the anti-baggy jeans with a plaid-lined trench coat, ribbed-knit turtleneck sweater, and brown suede Chelsea boots. 

I can’t wait to copy this look when I head to Boston later this fall. I’m turning to this similar pair of garment-dyed skinny jeans that one reviewer called “soft and comfortable,” adding that they “look and feel expensive.”
