Every fall, predictable colors pop up — hello, chocolate brown and burgundy — but this season, celebrities keep reaching for an unexpected pairing: navy and black.

Recently, Kendall Jenner paired a black boatneck top with a navy pencil skirt and matching ballet flats, while Sienna Miller gave us an easy-to-recreate outfit, wearing an oversized navy sweater, a black skirt, and black boots. Céline Dion offered a classy twist on the color combination by pairing a navy top with a black sequined skirt, and Lindsay Lohan layered a navy peacoat over her black dress.

Transfixed by these celeb outfits, I asked Laura Sawyier, a behavioral style expert, how to replicate the sophisticated looks. “So many rules are out of the book now, and not mixing black and navy is one of them,” she says. “It’s approachable and easy but looks luxe.” Ahead, Sawyier shares four ways to wear the unexpected color pairing using Quince clothing, starting at $16.

1. Wear Navy on Top

The great thing about pairing black with navy is that they’re easy colors to wear, and you likely already have some options in your closet, says Sawyier. However, if black feels “too dark” for some, she suggests wearing navy on top to add warmth. It prevents a washed-out look and is an easy entry point to a color palette that may feel outside your comfort zone, she adds.

2. Check Your Colors

Nailing the trend is simple — if you have the correct colors, notes Sawyier. “You want to make sure the black feels dark and fully saturated,” she says. “With navy, don’t go too dark, like a midnight perspective, but you also don’t want to go into a royal blue either.” With the proper tones, it pairs nicely and looks rich.

3. Add Some Texture

To balance the rich shades, add a piece with eye-catching texture, like a silk top or ponte pants with a seam, says Sawyier. “Adding different fabrics while playing with the colors gives it dimension,” she adds. You still can style a plain navy T-shirt with black jeans and look “minimalist,” she notes, but adding a chunky cardigan makes it cooler.

4. Avoid a 50-50 Color Split

When trying a new color blend, less is more, says Sawyier. “It doesn’t need to be so matchy-matchy,” she adds, suggesting that you keep a “60-40 rule.” You can also incorporate the trend more subtly by carrying a navy bag while wearing an all-black outfit. “Not everything has to be perfectly even,” Sawyier says, urging shoppers to “have fun with it.”
