The victim was identified as Samuber Shikhverdieva, 64, a spokesperson for the Philadelphia Police Department (PPD) tells PEOPLE.
Shikhverdieva was struck while jogging around 9:10 a.m. local time near 45th Street and Chester Avenue, police say. She was pronounced dead at the scene shortly afterward at 9:28 a.m. The PPD’s Crash Investigation Division is investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, and it is unclear whether charges will be filed against the SEPTA trolley operator.
“Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of the person who lost their life as we investigate this tragic accident,” a spokesperson for SEPTA said in a statement to local ABC affiliate WPVI. “SEPTA has also made services available for the trolley operator. The trolley has been replaced with shuttle buses on its usual route following the fatal incident, CBS Philadelphia reported.
“They started lifting the trolley, and that’s when I realized there was somebody under the trolley,” a witness told WPVI. “Just a solemn reminder it could happen at any moment.”
Another witness told the outlet that they allegedly observed Shikhverdieva wearing earbuds, and that she may have not heard the trolley coming.
