My hair type is fine (and dry, if you care), and more often than not I wear it down and styled in a blowout or loose waves. Because it’s on the thin side, I find that it looks its best when I can fake fullness, and that happens with a lot of tools (like my beloved Dyson Airwrap) as well as products, like thickening and volumizing sprays. When I wear my hair up (which, again, isn’t often), there are a few different TikTok hacks I like to use. Yes, the slick-back bun that’s loved by celebrities and models is great, but it can take a mountain of products and patience to create the perfect smooth look.
Instead, I lean on a few other styles geared toward fine or thin hair and making it appear fuller. There’s a two-part ponytail hack that always makes it look like I have more going on than I really do, and a trick that utilities a claw-clip for the same effect. The only problem is that sometimes I don’t have the time to go through a multi-step hair routine, so I’m always looking for something faster and easier to do. Enter: TikTok’s “drop ponytail” hack.
I came across the drop ponytail on Makenna Schwartz’s TikTok, where she showcased the hack for an easy, effortless style. The best part? It works on dry hair and only requires one thing — a hair tie — and a few seconds of your time. When I watched the video for the first time, I honestly didn’t think the results would be great, but after testing it out for myself I was pleasantly surprised to find that it worked extremely well for me.
When I first tried it out, I grabbed an elastic — my current favorite are the Amazon Hoyols 100pcs Soft Hair Ties ($7) — and situated myself in a location with a lot of space to move around. (More on that in a second.)

I began by flipping my head forward, bending over in the way I would be if I were touching my toes. (Hence, the “drop.”) Staying in that position, I then pulled my hair into a ponytail situated at the top of my head. Next, and here’s where things got a bit crazy, I grabbed my ponytail by the tail end and started shaking it around to loosen everything up. I gave it probably three to five solid shakes, and then flipped back over and stood upright. My ponytail was then completely loose — almost as if I had just spent an hour running or playing a game of basketball (two things I would never do, but alas). From there, I grabbed my ponytail, split it into two halves, and pulled to tighten. And that was it.
What I was left with was the cutest, most effortless messy ponytail I had ever seen — and it genuinely kind of shocked me. Even better: all the shaking and throwing my hair around made it look fuller than it would have if it were just in a regular ponytail, which was a major plus.
I’ve been seeing drop ponytails all over my for you page on TikTok, and plenty of people have been testing them out with great results. If you’re looking for an easy ponytail hack that will help you fake the look of fuller hair, give it a try. It only takes a hair tie and a few seconds, and it’s well worth the shake.
