A boxer has made history for Tuvalu by winning the tiny Pacific island nation’s first Commonwealth Games medal without winning a single fight.
Twenty-year-old Tarona Taafaki, one of five entrants in the women’s 75kg category, received a bye to the semi-finals where she lost on an unanimous points decision to India’s Lovlina Borgohain on Friday. At Commonwealth Games, all boxers eliminated in the semis receive bronze medals.
“I’m very proud and very glad to be able to represent my country on this big stage,” said Taafaki, one of only eight athletes and paraathletes from her country in Glasgow. “Probably 95% of the audience don’t know where my country is, so I feel very privileged to represent Tuvalu.”

They call it the Miracle Mile: the race still regarded as the greatest in Commonwealth Games history. And 72 years later in Glasgow, it finally has a worthy successor.
Rewind to 1954. In May Sir Roger Bannister had become the first man to run a mile in under four minutes. Six weeks later, the Australian John Landy lowered his mark by more than a second. Then came their epic clash in Vancouver.
“I felt it was a piece of unfinished business to be able to reproduce the performance of my sub-four-minute mile in a race,” Bannister later said. “However, at the half-mile … he was 15 yards ahead and I thought either he’s going to break a world record in 3min 56sec or he’s going to have to slow.”
Somehow Bannister dragged himself back into it by the bell, yet Landy was still leading as they turned into the home straight. But there was to be a dramatic late twist.
Because the roar of the crowd was so great, Landy was unable to hear his pursuer, so he looked over his left shoulder. At which point Bannister attacked and flew past his great rival on his right shoulder before storming to gold in 3:58.8.
On Saturday night the men’s mile should provide another contest for the ages, with Scotland’s Josh Kerr and Jake Wightman facing Australia’s new superstar Cameron Myers.

Teenage race walker Isaac Beacroft hit the accelerator on a dramatic final lap in the 10,000m then had to hit it again, celebrating Commonwealth Games gold 20 metres before the finish despite his Kenyan rival Stephen Kihu lurking just a few steps behind.
The result was the Australian highlight on a mixed day at Scotstoun Stadium in Glasgow, as Sarah Billings claimed her country’s first 800m women’s bronze in 36 years, even as track and field stars Nina Kennedy, Torrie Lewis and Lachie Kennedy were left disappointed.
Beacroft, the under-20 world record holder, stormed away from Kihu with 300m to go to secure gold. “Probably the last 15 laps, I was just waiting for Kihu to go, but he never did, so I sat in, and eventually had to go,” he told Channel Seven. “I went hard, about 95%, and then I knew he was going to come with me, but then I had another gear in there to really make it over.”
He secured the breakthrough win, but not without fraying the nerves of his father and coach David. “He’s having a panic,” Beacroft told Channel Seven with a smile. “He thought I was going to get chased down, and started celebrating too early. Rubbish.”
Boxing The first hands will be thrown just after 11am in women’s 54kg final between Scarlett Savannah Delgado and Preeti Preeti. That’s the first of 14 finals day on the last day of boxing at this year’s Games.
England’s Nathan Maguire wins gold!
Men’s 1500m T54 final Nathan Maguire powered to victory in the last lap, with Daniel Sidbury (England) taking silver and Sam Rizzo (Australia) the bronze.
Maguire, the husband of the great Hannah Cockroft, is being interviewed with their two-month-old daughter Rosie in his arms.
I was so boxed. And then I felt like Moses – it just parted and I got through. I don’t know how it happened!
There was a little bit of panic. When I heard the bell (for the last lap) I thought, ‘Oh my god, I’m so stuck.’ I dropped them a lot more than I expected!

New Zealand beat England in netball semi-final
The Black Ferns will play Australia or Jamaica in tomorrow’s gold-medal match after beating England 61-54 in the first semi-final at the Hydro.
New Zealand, who took bronze four years ago, are one game away from winning Commonwealth gold for the first time since 2010. This will be their first final since Glasgow 2014, when they lost to… Australia.

Day eight at the Games
There are late developers in sport, and then there is the brilliant Georgia Hunter Bell, who continues to defy sporting gravity at the age of 32.
And on Friday night under the Glasgow lights, she gave a tactical masterclass to outwit – and then outpace – the 800m world champion Lilian Odira and complete her set of global medals.
Incredibly it was only two years ago that she made her international debut here in Scotland’s biggest city. Back then she was a part-time runner working in tech. Now, staggeringly, she is one of Britain’s biggest sports stars and the proud owner of Olympic, World, European and now Commonwealth medals.
Netball semi-final New Zealand are just too good for England: they lead 55-44 with 7.38 to play.
The first athletics finals of the day are under way. They are, I think, the men’s shot put T57 and the men’s triple jump.

Netball semi-final England are under the pump against New Zealand in the first of today’s two semi-finals – they trail 46-37 at the end of the third quarter. It’s a long way back from here.
New Zealand took control in the first quarter, after which they led 16-11. The second was all square, 13 apiece, but New Zealand all but doubled their lead by taking the third quarter 17-13.

Hello and welcome to live coverage of a bumper day nine at the Commonwealth Games. There are – count ‘em, Stan – 44 gold medals up for grabs in the next 12 hours or so.
The athletics highlights include the men’s 800m, men’s and women’s 400m, men’s and women’s mile, men’s, women’s and mixed 4x100m relay, men’s triple jump, women’s long jump and the women’s javelin.
There was an early start at the Hydro, where a huge netball semi-final between New Zealand and England is well under way. Let’s get straight into that.
