Norwegian alt-pop artist MIIA has unveiled her long-awaited debut album, Huldra, a richly atmospheric collection inspired by one of Scandinavia’s most enduring legends. Released on July 13, 2026, the 13-track record marks a defining moment in the singer-songwriter’s career, weaving together themes of personal freedom, femininity, nature, healing and self-acceptance.

Produced by Benjamin Dan Ravn Fahre and Joachim JR Rygg, Huldra draws from a diverse sonic palette that spans pop, indie pop, dream pop, electronic pop, dark pop and Nordic pop. The result is a cinematic listening experience where expansive production meets emotionally candid songwriting.

The album takes its name from the huldra, a mythical forest spirit found throughout Norwegian, Swedish and German folklore. Traditionally depicted as both captivating and fearsome, the huldra exists beyond society’s rules, enchanting travellers with her voice while concealing a hollow back and a cow’s tail. Over generations, the character has evolved beyond folklore into a symbol of untamed nature, feminine strength and independence. For MIIA, the legend became a deeply personal metaphor.

“I’ve been fascinated by huldra for as long as I can remember,” says MIIA. “I’ve always felt connected to her, but I was also afraid of her. As I grew older, I understood why. Huldra was feared because she couldn’t be controlled, and because she had power. For years, I was afraid of my own power too. I wanted to be good, to be perfect, but perfection doesn’t exist.”

Rather than retelling the folklore, Huldra reimagines it as a journey through emotional transformation. Love, heartbreak, longing, grief, forgiveness and renewal all feature across the album, encouraging listeners to embrace the contradictions that make them human instead of striving for impossible ideals.

MIIA hopes the record resonates far beyond its mythology: “I hope this album inspires people to accept themselves completely, flaws and all. To allow themselves to fail, to explore creativity and sexuality without shame, and to embrace vulnerability, rage, softness, and strength as natural parts of being human. This is a journey toward self-love, freedom, and the death of shame.”

The album unfolds as an emotional arc, with each song representing a different chapter in that evolution. Tracks such as ‘I Can Tell a Lie’ explore vulnerability and emotional honesty, while ‘Necessary Evil’ examines difficult choices and moral complexity. Elsewhere, ‘Delicious’ embraces feminine confidence, ‘I’m in Love with You’ captures the exhilaration of falling deeply for someone, and the closing track ‘Huldrarave’ offers a sense of release, acceptance and self-forgiveness.

Beyond her recording career, MIIA’s music has featured in film, television, trailers and international campaigns, including UNICEF’s One Family Against a World of Climate Change. She has also become recognised for using her platform to advocate for gender equality, climate action and human rights.

A key part of MIIA’s career has been the close relationship she has cultivated with her fan community, affectionately known as her ‘Beautiful Creatures’. Through social media, livestreams and regular conversations with listeners, she has created an online space where openness, imagination and emotional honesty are actively encouraged.
