Nick Reiner has been indicted on murder charges in connection with the December 2025 killings of his parents Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner.
A Los Angeles grand jury returned an indictment on two counts of first-degree murder, which will replace the original murder counts filed against Nick last year.
According to the indictment obtained by PEOPLE, Nick is now facing a new alleged special circumstance of lying in wait, in addition to the use of a knife.
The indictment, which was returned in July, was unsealed on Wednesday, Aug. 12.
“This was a profound betrayal by someone who was loved and trusted by the very people he is accused of killing,” Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman said in a statement. “The indictment unsealed today also adds a special circumstance allegation that the defendant committed the murders by means of lying in wait.”
“We hope that by having a grand jury return an indictment in this case it will bring us one step closer to a trial and achieving justice,” the statement continued.
With the indictment, there is likely no longer a need for a public preliminary hearing to determine if there is enough evidence to go forward with the case.
A preliminary hearing had been expected to take place sometime in the fall.

Nick, who is currently behind bars at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in Los Angeles, previously pleaded not guilty to his parents’ murders, though he has not yet responded to the indictment.
The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office alleges that Nick fatally stabbed Rob and Michelle inside their Brentwood home in the early morning hours of Dec. 14. He was arrested hours later near the campus of the University of Southern California and has been held without bail since.

He is scheduled to return to court for a pretrial hearing on Sept. 15.
If convicted as charged, Nick faces death or life in prison without the possibility of parole. A decision on whether to seek the death penalty has not yet been made, per the district attorney’s office.
