The actress is launching a social media series for honest discussions about her own breast cancer journey, sharing that she felt ‘lost’ when she was diagnosed

Olivia Munn is getting personal with her breast cancer journey.

The Your Friends & Neighbors star, 46, is working to build a community around those who’ve struggled with the disease — which she quips is “the worst club with the best members.” On Wednesday, Aug. 12, Munn shared in an Instagram post that she is launching a new social media series to answer questions and share specifics about her life with the disease.

“The sisterhood I’ve found of women who have battled/are currently battling the same fight are the most incredible, generous, supportive people I’ve ever met,” she continued in the caption.

In a video accompanying her post, Munn said she’s been “wanting to answer everyone’s questions about my breast cancer journey for quite a bit of time now …  I’ve just been waiting for like, when’s the right time? Like, when do I like not look exhausted?”

The frank conversations, Munn said, are “healing for me” because “I know that just simply talking about my breast cancer journey is going to be helpful for someone out there.” In the beginning of her journey, Munn felt “lost,” until she saw other women sharing their story online, she said.

“It just gave me just a little bit more hope that things would be okay.”

In 2024, Munn shared that she’d been diagnosed with bilateral breast cancer, which she wrote at the time was “very aggressive, fast-moving” and required her to undergo five surgeries, including a double mastectomy in May 2023.

“The question I get most is, how am I doing today?” Munn said in her video on Wednesday. “Today, I’m doing really good.” However, she added, “Most people who are going through any type of cancer can tell you that every day is different. And sometimes you feel like you’re really on an upswing, and then there are other times when you’re like, ‘Oh my gosh, this is so difficult. How is this still so hard?’ ”

She said her days are now a “balancing act” as a working mom with two kids, whom she called “the best things in the whole world.”  Munn shares son Malcolm Hiệp, 4, and daughter Méi June, who turns 2 next month, with partner John Mulaney, 43.)

As for her health, Munn briefly opened up about the realities of surgical menopause. (The actress underwent medically-induced menopause as part of her cancer treatment.)

She said on Wednesday that the “medications are very difficult. It’s the stuff we have to do after the big hurdles that are kind of like, there’s big hurdles, and there’s long hurdles, and I’m in the long hurdle right now.”

She noted that she’ll answer any questions asked in the comments, and that she looks forward to posting a follow-up video “now that I’ve taken a lot of pressure off of myself.”  

“I’ve spoken a lot publicly about every step I’ve taken on this path and I still get lots of questions,” she concluded in her caption. “I hope making this series to live on my page will help anyone going through this and also anyone who knows someone going through this.”
