Early in her career, Stewart was “miscast” as a “teen idol,” says Meyer, the writer and director of ‘The Wrong Girls’

NEED TO KNOW

  • Dylan Meyer, writer-director of The Wrong Girls, tells PEOPLE about working with now-wife Kristen Stewart on the buddy comedy
  • Upon first meeting, Meyer recalls that the Twilight alum did not match the public perception of her as “a teen idol”
  • “She’s such a deadbeat like me,” jokes the filmmaker

Kristen Stewart’s wife Dylan Meyer had a memorable first impression of the actress.

“I met her on another movie, and we just really liked each other,” Meyer, the writer-director of The Wrong Girls (in theaters now), tells PEOPLE. That, she adds with a smile, “ended up being a whole thing, as you can see.”

Meyer’s view of the Twilight star differed from the general public’s idea of her, she jokingly recalls: “I was like, ‘I can’t believe anyone ever let this person be a teen idol. She’s such a deadbeat like me.’ Like, ‘That’s so crazy. She’s been miscast.’”

Stewart, 36, met her now-wife on the set of 2013’s American Ultra — several years before reconnecting, as Meyer recalls. “At the time we just thought each other were really rad.” After “six or seven years went by,” she adds, “then we were falling in love.”

Meyer had first sent Stewart an early draft of The Wrong Girls, a stoner buddy comedy centered on two Los Angeles-based women, back in 2013. It wasn’t until they were romantically linked that the script resurfaced, the filmmaker says, as she and Stewart “were sharing everything we were working on because we’re both art brain freaks.”

The Spencer Oscar nominee had a strong opinion about who should play Frankie — herself — and who should make her feature directorial debut with the film — Meyer. “I was like, ‘Oh, I think I might make another movie first. That movie’s pretty expensive, I think, for a first film,’” recalls Meyer. But Stewart was adamant: “‘I really want to play this part and I really believe you’re the person to direct it.’”

After shooting had wrapped on The Wrong Girls came another milestone in Stewart and Meyer’s relationship: tying the knot. The couple, engaged since 2021, wed in Los Angeles’ Casita Del Campo Mexican restaurant on April 20, 2025 with 170 guests in attendance, a source told PEOPLE at the time.

“Now we’ve been married for a year and a half,” says Meyer with a grin. “Also we got married in between shooting this movie and doing post on this movie a week before we went to Cannes for her movie [The Chronology of Water]. So everything has been really, really congested in an electric and also sometimes overwhelming kind of way.”

Stewart and Alia Shawkat star in The Wrong Girls with LaKeith Stanfield, Tony Hale, Zack Fox, Kate McKinnon and Geena Davis, plus Seth Rogen and Kumail Nanjiani as the titular characters’ cats.
