The driver of the Jeep that Richard Arriviello, 61, allegedly shot into has been charged with reckless driving, Virginia State Police said. The driver’s identity was not disclosed.

A North Carolina doctor was arrested over the weekend after authorities say he shot into a moving Jeep on a Virginia interstate, striking two sisters in the legs.

Shortly before 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, Virginia State Police were notified of a shooting along Interstate 77 northbound in Carroll County, about three miles from the North Carolina-Virginia state line, the agency said in a news release obtained by PEOPLE.  

The shooting followed a reported road rage incident, state police said.

After the shooting, the suspect fled the scene in a Mercedes-Benz, according to authorities. The vehicle was later stopped on Interstate 77 at Exit 19, and Richard Arriviello, 61, of Charlotte, N.C., was taken into custody.

He is accused of malicious shooting into an occupied vehicle, shooting from a vehicle, maliciously causing bodily harm to another with intent to maim, and use of a firearm while committing a felony.

State police said two sisters, ages 12 and 20, were shot in the legs. Both were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Matthew Demlein, public relations coordinator for the State Police, tells PEOPLE.

The driver of the Jeep has been charged with reckless driving, state police said. The driver’s identity was not disclosed.

According to the North Carolina Medical Board’s website, Arriviello has been a licensed physician in the state since 2010. Charlotte television station WBTV reported he is the owner of Family Urgent Care in Monroe, N.C. The facility did not immediately respond to a request for comment Tuesday.

Arriviello remained in custody at the New River Valley Regional Jail as of Tuesday afternoon.
