The man received a five-month sentence after a court convicted him of a privacy offense for recording his wife without her consent, according to the South China Morning Post and Taiwanese outlets TVBS and FTV News.

The husband remotely activated the robot vacuum through a mobile app after becoming suspicious that his wife was involved with another man, the outlets reported.

He maintained that he initially intended to use the device to speak with his wife but saw another man inside the residence and then activated its recording function. The footage showed his wife naked in front of the other man, according to the outlets.

The husband subsequently filed a civil lawsuit against his wife and the man, alleging that they had infringed on his marital rights. A court ordered the pair to pay him NT$500,000 jointly.

The wife then filed a criminal complaint against her husband, accusing him of recording private images of her without her consent, the outlets reported.

He reportedly admitted to operating the robot vacuum and recording the footage but argued that he had done so to collect evidence for his civil case.

The court rejected his defense, finding that marital obligations do not override an individual’s right to privacy, per the outlets.

The robot vacuum allowed the husband to view a live feed through its app, but he had to activate its recording function separately before the footage could be saved. The device reportedly issued an alert when recording began. However, the court found there was no evidence that the wife knew she was being recorded or had consented to it.

The court ultimately convicted the husband of a privacy offense for recording his wife without her consent and imposed a five-month sentence, according to the outlets.
