There’s one thing I always look forward to as cozy season approaches: rewatching my favorite ’90s rom-coms. And because it’s part of my job to recreate celebrity looks, it’s only fitting that I turn to Meg Ryan (a.k.a “Shopgirl”) for outfit inspiration.
After recently revisiting You’ve Got Mail, I noticed that Ryan’s character — the effervescent indie bookshop owner Kathleen Kelly — was clad in a mix of ’90s fashion pieces and timeless staples that are undoubtedly shaping my autumn closet update. Below, I’m sharing similar nostalgic fall essentials from $13, including a playful peacoat, mock neck sweater, and twirl-worthy dress.
They’re so cute, you’ll want to share them with your AOL pen pals — er, I mean, group chat.

Pumpkin Haul Outfit
Chartou Single-Breasted Pea Coat

$53 $42 at Amazon
It’s hard to find a more fall-coded moment than when Ryan strolls down a bustling New York City street, dressed in a pea coat, and with a pumpkin tucked under her arm. It reminded me how much I love the simple and sophisticated silhouette of that layer, so I added this structured option to my cart. Between the notched lapels, marbled buttons, and fuzzy fabric, it’s a polished coat that’ll instantly upgrade my casual fall outfits.

Mangopop Mock Turtleneck

Ryan’s monochromatic dinner party look is effortlessly elegant, not to mention its standout piece — a mock neck sweater — is a reliable base layer for fall. This pretty style has similar elbow-length sleeves so I can show off my bracelet stacks and keep my arms cool during warmer autumn days. Even better? While I can wear it with dress pants and ankle boots à la Ryan, it also goes well with jeans, skirts, and even sweatpants.

There’s something incredibly whimsical about the airy A-line dress Ryan’s character wears when she finally realizes Joe Fox is her mysterious pen pal, a.k.a. NY152 (played by Tom Hanks) — it’s been 28 years, so no, that’s not a spoiler.
Because I love the dress’ twirl-worthy skirt, I naturally gravitated to this pleated dress in a neutral creamy hue. I’d style it with a long cardigan and pretty flats for now (like Ryan), but when temperatures drop, I’m layering it with a chunky sweater, tights, and knee-high boots.
