Singer-songwriter Steve Stinson turns heartbreak, uncertainty and years of life-changing experiences into his debut album Cocoon, a nine-track collection that explores how unexpected setbacks can ultimately reshape a person’s sense of purpose.

Blending blues, folk and Americana with melodic warmth and richly drawn storytelling, the album reflects on what happens when life refuses to follow the path we have planned for it. Rather than resisting those disruptions, Stinson uses them as a starting point, examining how disappointment, upheaval and uncertainty can become catalysts for change.

The idea is rooted in a pivotal period in Stinson’s own life. While building a promising career outside music, he made the decision to leave his job and follow a relationship to Europe. When the relationship ended before the move could take place, Stinson returned to work carrying the weight of an experience that would ultimately make him question the direction his life was taking.

That experience became the inspiration for Cocoon, the album’s title track. What begins as a deeply personal reflection on heartbreak develops into a broader meditation on growth and transformation, recognising that experiences which feel devastating in the moment can sometimes become the very things that push us towards something new.

That philosophy runs throughout the record. Previously released single ‘Does Anyone Else’ captures Stinson questioning the pursuit of career progression at the expense of personal fulfilment, while ‘Evergreen’ turns towards the passion that remained a constant throughout the changes in his life: music.

“Everybody’s got to start somewhere,” Stinson says. “But ultimately, I think it really just starts with a change of perspective.”

On ‘Fly Away’, that search for purpose expands into Stinson’s experiences of life abroad. The song reflects on his move from the United States to Australia and the years of travel that followed, while considering how a sense of home can evolve alongside personal identity.

“It’s about discovering that home isn’t always a place,” he explains. “Sometimes it’s the person you become along the way.”

The remaining tracks, including ‘Always On My Mind’, ‘Lost In The Tide’, ‘Make You Move’, ‘New Reality’ and ‘The Ledger’, continue that journey. Together, they chart a life in motion, exploring identity, purpose and the ways in which experience can gradually alter our understanding of both.

Stinson’s own life has provided plenty of material for that exploration. Born in Stillwater, Oklahoma, raised between the United States and Australia and now based in Papua New Guinea, he has spent much of his life adapting to new places and circumstances. His musical influences range from the storytelling traditions of Bob Dylan and Fleetwood Mac to the piano-led emotional immediacy of The Fray and the atmospheric sound of Coldplay.

Country and blues, which Stinson heard through his father during childhood, also form part of that musical foundation. Those influences give the album a familiar roots-oriented quality while allowing his own experiences and songwriting perspective to remain at the centre.

With Cocoon, years spent writing, travelling, working and questioning have converged into Stinson’s first full-length statement. The album’s release also mirrors its central message. Transformation rarely happens overnight. It requires persistence, sacrifice and the willingness to take an uncertain first step.

“I hope that the record achieves what its theme is, that hard work and consistency pay off in the long run,” Stinson says. “Making music is fun, but it isn’t easy or cheap either. There’s some sacrifice that comes with it, and for me this is the first step.”

For Stinson, that first step is also about connecting with listeners who may recognise something of their own experiences in the songs.

“I hope that listeners find a new sound that they like. Something new is always nice. But I also hope that it hits home somewhere for them in a way that aligns with the themes of the album.”

Ultimately, Cocoon does not portray transformation as a straightforward journey from one version of yourself to another. Instead, Steve Stinson’s debut album embraces the uncertainty that exists in between, finding meaning in the heartbreaks, departures, questions and leaps of faith that can slowly turn difficult experiences into opportunities for growth.
