Justin Timberlake has some thoughts on his beatboxing era.

The *NSYNC alum, 45, replied to a viral Instagram Reel shared by Hannah Young on Monday, Oct. 5.

“We don’t talk about Justin Timberlake beatboxing enough,” Young says in the video. “Because there was a moment in time where that man would be in the middle of a song and just boots and cats and boots and cats.”

“Nobody questioned it,” Young continued. “Nobody said ‘Justin, you know? We have drums. This is a professional recording studio. There are instruments available to you.’”

“And we liked it,” Young added. “That’s what I need us to sit with. We were watching that man make drum noises with his mouth, like, ‘oh, my god, what can’t he do?’ ”

As fans in the comments shared their own mixed feelings on Timberlake’s beatboxing skills, the singer himself jokingly chimed in with an apology.

“I often look back on that time as well,” Timberlake wrote. “I still haven’t come up with any answers. I don’t know how to apologize enough for whatever those ambitions were. Too many boots. Too many cats. I hope you can forgive me. Also, I can’t promise I won’t do it again. God help us all.”

“To be fair, dude was good at it,” another fan chimed in.

Timberlake famously beatboxed in *NSYNC’s song “Pop” from their 2001 album Celebrity at the height of the group’s fame, and later took his beatboxing to the next level through his live beatbox battles during the ensuing tour.

During a 2023 appearance on Hot Ones opposite his fellow former *NSYNC members, Timberlake referred to the beatboxing as “slightly regrettable,” while Lance Bass called it “iconic.”
