Lizzo is opening up about her perspective after being accused of harassment and a hostile work environment in a series of lawsuits.
During an appearance on Sunday TODAY with Willie Geist on Sunday, Oct. 4, the “About Damn Time” Lizzo discussed the dismissal of a 2023 lawsuit filed by Asha Daniels against the singer’s touring company Big Grrrls. The lawsuit was thrown out on Sept. 1, per documents previously obtained by PEOPLE.
During Sunday’s interview, Lizzo, 38, also discussed another lawsuit brought against her in 2023 by three of her former backup dancers. In that filing, Lizzo was accused of sexual and racial harassment, and allegedly creating a hostile work environment.
“I had to make peace with the fact that there’s a version of Lizzo that exists now that the world controls the narrative and I don’t,” Lizzo (real name Melissa Jefferson) said. “But what I can control is who I really am.”
When Geist, 51, asked if she felt the need to defend herself amid the ongoing allegations, Lizzo said, “I’m not a fighter, I’m a lover.”
“I think that is the business that I’m in now, because I do realize it’s a headline game,” she added. “I’m like, okay, how many headlines can I have out there about the things that I’m doing that I’m proud of? And that I actually did?”
Lizzo went on to call her experiences with the lawsuits “an opportunity for growth.”
“It’s an opportunity for self-reflection and to learn about yourself and to even if you don’t like parts of yourself, deal with it and work on it,” she continued. “And then the person you become at the end of that is someone you couldn’t even imagine, and you fall in love with them.”
In Daniels’ lawsuit, filed in 2023, the former wardrobe stylist claimed she dealt with a “culture of racism and bullying” while working on Lizzo’s tour. Her lawsuit has been dismissed, per court documents filed on Sept. 1 previously obtained by PEOPLE.
Judge Aenlle-Rocha wrote in the motion in part that the plaintiff “did not identify any conduct” that would “demonstrate general hostility to women in the workplace or disparate treatment of men and women.”
Following the dismissal of Daniels’ lawsuit, Lizzo shared in a social media video that she was “relieved” that the “shocking” allegations had been thrown out.

“I prayed for the truth to come out, and thanks to my incredible lawyers, the truth has prevailed,” she wrote over a clip of her standing and looking into the camera. “The truth matters more to me than anything, and I told y’all I will not settle and will continue to fight until every vicious claim that has been made against me and my businesses.”
In a statement previously shared with PEOPLE, Daniels’ attorney Ron Zambrano expressed disappointment in the ruling and said that they are “considering appropriate next steps.”
The four-time Grammy winner is still facing lawsuits from her former backup dancers, which were filed in August 2023.
