Goal! Crystal Palace 2-1 Nottingham Forest (Lerna, 45+4)
Palace somehow rampant. Wharton’s corner comes in, and Lerna bundles home. Disaster for Forest, all those missed chances now rued. Matz Sels had just made a brilliant save from Tyrick Mitchell. Here’s VAR, but no, given.
Niall Fogarty gets in touch: “It seems that VAR wants to find reasons to punish Everton. This is the second time in three games VAR has disallowed an EFC goal for incredibly petty reasons… happened last season too.”
Hull 0-0 Everton: Two chances for Hull, first for Joe Gelhardt, firing just wide, and then Nobel Mendy heading wide from a corner. Hull have pushed onwards since that disallowed goal.
Crystal Palace 1-1 Nottingham Forest: Palace had been battered, and had not had a shot for 30 minutes. And yet here we are. It’s been a tough season so far for Glasner at Forest though he took time at Palace, with historic results following by the end.
Goal! Crystal Palace 1-1 Nottingham Forest (Kamada, 41)
Where did that come from? Palace put together a passing move, and Kamada slots in, so coolly. Strand Larsen’s flick finds the Japan player, and then Quinten Timber finds the final assist. and Oliver Glasner is aghast. Here’s VAR…and it stands….
Norrie gets in touch: “Incredibly annoying to see the continued trend today of pundits, players and managers dead-batting with “let’s wait for the appeal.” Let’s not. A three-year process concluded with an emphatic result of overwhelming guilt. If any of these people have any reason as to why an appeal will overturn that – let alone for why City should be allowed to further delay – they should say so.”
Crystal Palace 0-1 Nottingham Forest: While all that VAR was rolling on in Hull, Forest should have had another goal. Morgan Gibbs-White hit the crossbar and Liam Delap cannot beat Walter Benitez when he might have done better. Palace living very dangerously.
On-field review from referee – Everton goal ruled out
The goal does not stand… Tzolakis dropped the ball … and was Johnson behind him? “Everton no 22 is in an offside position,” says the ref. And that gets huge cheers.
Goal! Hull 0-1 Everton (Johnson, 34) – but VAR on the case
Grealish and Branthwaite get the ball into the Hull box and following a ricochet, Johnson stabs home. Was the keeper impeded? Hull are raging.
Crystal Palace 0-1 Nottingham Forest: Forest may be disappointed they do not have a greater advantage. Can Palace be this organised for the full 90? Perhaps they can … Gibbs-White smashes the latest decent Forest chance wide. There are great spaces in the Palace half to exploit.
Hull 0-0 Everton: Garner, who spent the international break with England, flashes over a corner that Branthwaite smashes back into the area. Hull are doing well enough, holding off the threat of their visitors.
And here’s our Scottish roundup.
Crystal Palace 0-1 Nottingham Forest: Ndoye has a header saved by Walter Benitez, and then there’s one hell of a scramble in the Palace box. All problems caused by playing out from the back. Pierre Sage would seem to employ that Russell Martin ideal. Steve Parish, in the stand, looks unimpressed. Palace perhaps lucky to be only a goal behind.
Hull 0-0 Everton: Some afters in Hull, where Tarkowski and McBurnie fight out a running battle, the Hull striker getting booked. VAR looked at the Tarkowski challenge that set off the rancour.
Here’s Billy Munday’s report from that south coast derby.
Hull 0-0 Everton: Branthwaite, the auxialiary left-back, looks to be walking slowly. He’s had his injury problems, some of which possibly prevented him from being sold off.
Crystal Palace 0-1 Nottingham Forest: Gibbs-White is doing the usual, given the free role he likes by his manager, and looking for openings. James McAtee almost finds one, only to be fouled by Jefferson Lerna, who is booked. Not a red, as there was cover between McAtee and goal.
Hull 0-0 Everton: Jack Grealish is fouled by Matt Crooks after a poor first touch from the Hull player. That’s his fourth booking of the season. What’s that joke? His second touch is a tackle.
Crystal Palace 0-1 Nottingham Forest: Quinten Timber fires a shot wide. Palace have looked capable of creating chances.
Crystal Palace 0-1 Nottingham Forest: Palace might have pulled level, though Strand Larsen might have done better to have hit the ball at Matz Sels, the Forest keeper.
Hull 0-0 Everton: Branthwaite goes on the overlap as he receives a pass from Dewsbury-Hall. Everton are dominating possession, which is all part of Sergej Jakirovic’s plan.
Crystal Palace 0-1 Nottingham Forest: Ndoye did well for Switzerland in the Nations League and has taken his confidence into club football. Forest’s away form continues to look better than at the City Ground.
Goal! Crystal Palace 0-1 Nottingham Forest (Ndoye, 3)
What a goal. Palace concede possession and Ndoye makes hay, Khalali the guilty party, and the Forest fans can sing for Oliver Glasner.
Hull 0-0 Everton: Jarrad Branthwaite is lining up at left-back for Everton; the latest example of the club’s failings in the summer transfer window. Good player, but he’s a centre-back by design.
To the Premier League we revert, with Hull v Everton, and Crystal Palace v Nottingham Forest. And we are underway in both.
What does that mean for the Championship table? Report and reaction to follow.
Full-time: Southampton 1-0 Portsmouth
This was a case of Saints toughing it out. Portsmouth have not proved capable of finding a way back from James Bree’s goal, and even after Cameron Bragg’s first-half red card. The Portsmouth fans will be kept back for a while yet and they do so in disappointment.
Southampton 1-0 Portsmouth
Marko Milovanovic fires a late chance wide for Portsmouth but he was at the wrong angle in any case.
Southampton 1-0 Portsmouth
Daniel Peretz climbs up to claim a Bailey cross to loud cheers from the home fans. Portsmouth look to have run out of ideas.
Southampton 1-0 Portsmouth
Nothing much being created by Pompey, for all their efforts, with the ball falling to Abou Kamara in the box, though he loses the flight of it. Saints clear their lines. As they have done all afternoon. Big cheers when Azaz buys a foul, and Portsmouth’s Poole takes a chunk out of the Ireland player. There’s five minutes to be added on here.
Southampton 1-0 Portsmouth
Having threatened to boil over further following the dismissal of Cameron Bragg, Saints have been tighter, more controlled, but as soon as that is said, Nico Schlotterbeck is booked. James Bree is in a bandage, having taken a bang to the head. He then concedes a soft corner that is cleared away after a couple of swings and misses from both sides.
Niall Mullen gets in touch: “It’s funny how having let a bull into the china shop in 2008 the Premier League has finally determined that the bull did in fact, contrary to the rules, break all of the china. Meanwhile the bull has evidence (dare I say, irrefutable evidence) that the china remains intact and that they are not even a bull but a porcelain enthusiast who has been excluded from the trade by big Delft. Meanwhile, pending a check to make sure the china was actually broken, the bull continues to terrorise the high street.”
Southampton 1-0 Portsmouth
Down on the south coast, Pompey are going at it but Saints can see the finishing line. Caspar Jander has replaced Cyle Larin with Finn Azaz asked to lead the line in the Canadian’s stead.
Oliver Glasner spoke to Ben Fisher ahead of his return to Crystal Palace.
Glasner was on holiday in the serene Austrian lakes with his wife, Bettina, the sun beating down on the water, when the interest from Forest ramped up. “She said: ‘Why are you always looking at your phone?’ [I said:] ‘I’m going to Athens tomorrow.’ She said: ‘Are you crazy? We are here on vacation.’ There were many, many different options in the summer. The one I thought I would do is staying at home, which is why my family was not really pleased with my early decision to leave again … but in that moment when I looked in detail, into the [Forest] squad, and [gathered] my thoughts, I started to get butterflies.”
Last time out for the 2pm Premier League kickoffs.
The prelims to Palace v Forest saw Oliver Glasner and Daniel Munoz get a warm reception when returning to Selhurst Park. Forest’s better performances have come away from home, including their sole win, at Aston Villa. That’s very Glasner, as Palace fans would recognise.
Southampton 1-0 Portsmouth
Terry Devlin, Marko Milovanovic and Odin Bailey arrive as Pompey subs, with Devlin getting involved almost immediately and getting booked for a hacking challenge on Ryan Manning.
