In September, the actor spent nearly a week in the hospital. He was admitted on Sept. 18 after Thompson attempted to commit suicide at his home, according to police and his lawyers’ statements in court records reviewed by PEOPLE.

On Sept. 18, a rep for the performer told PEOPLE that he was “hospitalized and under close medical care.”

“He is now awake, breathing on his own and continuing to improve, surrounded by his family and those closest to him,” the rep said. “Humor has always been such an important part of who Scott is and how he connects with people, and that remains true today as he shares moments of humor with the medical staff caring for him.”
