Paul McCartney is remembering his late wife, Linda.
In a new interview on Amy Poehler’s Good Hang podcast, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member, 84, got emotional speaking about Linda, who died of breast cancer in 1998 at age 56. The pair was married from 1969 through her death.
Linda came up in conversation as Poehler asked McCartney about their friendship with Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders, who appears in the Wings musician’s new Prime Video documentary Man on the Run. “We love Chrissie,” he said. “She’s a dude.”
McCartney recalled meeting Hynde at a recording studio. “She was just walking down the corridor, and she was very moody with the hair down and sort of wouldn’t look at you, but Linda didn’t do that,” he recalled. “She would approach, ‘Hi, how are you doing?’”
He continued, “They got talking, and so we met her. And Chrissie stopped being so moody and just talked to us, and we had a lot of stuff in common.”
The Beatles alum described Hynde as a “crazy vegetarian” and noted, “We had that in common.”
“Linda was very outspoken on that subject — to the point where if it hadn’t been her it would’ve been embarrassing,” said McCartney. “If you’re at a dinner party, and someone was eating meat, she would give them trouble over it.”
He explained, “She had this kind of Disney-esque view of animals. If we saw a frog in a garden or something, she’d pick it up. Not every girl would. She’d pick it up, and the way — I’m getting emotional — the way she would hold it wouldn’t hurt it. And she would say, ‘Its mommy loved it.’”
“She was something else. Tough, tough lady,” said McCartney, who then started crying and took a tissue from Poehler to wipe his eyes.
Paul McCartney: Man on the Run was released in February.
