NEED TO KNOW

  • Anna Faris said Chuck Lorre’s remarks about her Mom departure were unexpected and hurtful in an Oct. 15 social media post
  • She left the sitcom before its eighth and final season after starring as Christy Plunkett for seven years
  • Faris said she is now sober, healthy, working and happier after taking time away from acting

Anna Faris is responding to claims made in Chuck Lorre’s new memoir about her “mysterious” exit from Mom.

Days after the television producer, writer and director, 73, released his memoir Sitcom, the Scary Movie star, 49, used social media to share her surprise and address why she suddenly left Mom after seven seasons.

“Yikes. Yes, I read a few things. I really didn’t see that coming. Of course it hurts,” she wrote in an Instagram post on Thursday, Oct. 15.

However, the House Bunny actress went on to express her gratitude for Lorre, who wrote that he was reluctant to cast her, but later changed his mind. “Someone’s personal life is none of my business,” he wrote in his book.

However, he later wrote that “it became apparent that my initial reluctance to hire Anna was, in fact, correct” as the series continued, noting Faris left under “mysterious reasons.”

“Chuck gave me a job I loved, and for seven years I never took a day of it for granted. I’m proud of what we made together, and nothing changes how grateful I am for those people and those years,” Faris wrote.

“I’ve been sober for a year and a half. I was on a show about recovery and then I lived it. Now I’m healthy, I’m working, and I’m happier than I’ve been in a long time. If anyone reading this is where I was, I hope that’s useful. It gets better. I’m proof,” she continued.

Mom aired for eight seasons from 2013 until 2020. Faris starred as Christy Plunkett, a newly sober single mom raising her two kids in Napa Valley, Calif. Allison Janney played Christy’s mother, who was also a recovering addict. The story was inspired by Lorre’s own experiences with sobriety.

In September 2020, the actress announced her exit ahead of the show’s eighth and final season.

“The past seven years on Mom have been some of the most fulfilling and rewarding of my career,” Faris said in a statement at the time. “I’m so thankful to Chuck, the writers, and my amazing castmates for creating a truly wonderful work experience. While my journey as Christy has come to an end, allowing me to pursue new opportunities, I’ll be watching next season and rooting for my TV family.”

She did not provide a reason for her exit, but later told PEOPLE in November 2022 that she was contemplating taking a step back from acting.

“I was like, ‘Do I have enough [money] to retire?’” Faris told PEOPLE.

She later told Chelsea Handler on the Dear Chelsea podcast in August 2026 that she was “disturbed by my lack of ambition,” and was suffering from mental health struggles.

“I was, in hindsight, I think pretty depressed, like, premenopausal depression without recognizing it,” she said. “I was just having a distant relationship with this city and my career and wondering if I had enough money to retire.”

Faris also explained to Handler, 51, that there was “a correlation between drinking and depression for me… I had to take a step back and not self-sabotage.”

Sitcom is out now. Faris recently starred in the sixth Scary Movie film, Spa Weekend and Primetime.
