Portugal. The Man brought their Denali Tour to Sydney’s Metro Theatre this week, with frontman John Gourley at the helm. Since breaking into the mainstream with 2017’s ‘Woodstock’ and Grammy-winning hit ‘Feel It Still’, the group have continued to move between psychedelic rock, pop and experimental sounds, with Gourley’s unmistakable voice tying it all together.

Gourley is now the sole remaining original member, with a newer touring lineup bringing a different dynamic to the live show. Their latest album, ‘SHISH’ (2025), draws on Gourley’s Alaskan upbringing, pairing heavier guitars with the psychedelia that have long shaped the band’s sound. The Denali Tour gives the record its own space, balancing newer material with the songs that first brought Portugal. The Man to a much wider audience.

Opening act, Brisbane’s Dizzy Days, were fantastic, delivering a set that made an early arrival well worthwhile. Portugal. The Man followed with Gourley’s easygoing presence anchoring the chaos unfolding around him. The atmosphere was warm, the musicianship was tight, and there was a genuine sense that everyone in the room was having a good time.

The Denali Tour heads to Naarm/Melbourne on 16th October before beginning an extensive leg across Europe in November.
