  • Jon Lovitz played fast-talking baseball scout Ernie Capadino in 1992’s A League of Their Own
  • He used tricks like putting grapes in his pants to lure the chickens toward him
  • Lovitz recalled filming the Oregon dairy farm scene on Michael Rosenbaum’s podcast

Jon Lovitz is recounting the behind-the-scenes secrets of a scene in 1992’s A League of Their Own.

On the Tuesday, Oct. 20 episode of Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum, Lovitz, 69, shared details of the scene which found him putting grapes in his pants cuffs to lure chickens toward him. The scene in question saw the actor’s character, Ernie Capadino, a fast-talking baseball scout, traveling to a farm to recruit Dottie Hinson (Geena Davis) and her sister Kit Keller (Lori Petty) for a newly women’s professional baseball league.

In the scene, the women are playing baseball on an Oregon dairy farm while Lovitz’s character gets swarmed by chickens, yelling, “Get these wild animals off of me. Haven’t you people heard of a leash?”

To get the chickens around him, Lovitz said the animals had to be drawn to him.

“To get them all around me, they put grapes in the cuffs of my pants,” he said on the podcast. “And then they put eggshells on the ground because they go, ‘they like to peck eggshells.’ And it was about 4:00 in the afternoon and I mean it was beautiful, you know. But I’m looking at Lori with these grapes and these eggshells. And I remember, I go, ‘Lori, look at these grapes and eggshells. Look what we do for a living. This is crazy.’ ”

Lovitz added that he remembered the moment “like it was yesterday.”

“It was beautiful, but it was so, like, this is work. I mean, it was insane, you know? It was so much fun, but … what job? Only acting,” he said. “Some jobs [have you] standing in the middle of a field with with grapes and chickens all around you.”

The film followed the fictionalized story of the real-life All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, which was developed during World War II.

The movie also starred Madonna, Tom Hanks, Rosie O’Donnell, Megan Cavanagh, Ann Cusack, Tracy Reiner and Freddie Simpson, to name a few.
