During a surprise appearance on ‘The Graham Norton Show,’ the royal joked he “couldn’t work out why” Kelce kept re-entering the frame of the 2024 selfie

Over two years ago, Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce went Instagram official in a selfie with Prince William and his kids. Now, the royal has jokingly revealed that he attempted to nudge the NFL star out of the group photo.

During his surprise The Graham Norton Show appearance on the Friday, Oct. 23, episode, the Prince of Wales, 44, discussed the selfie he snapped with Swift, 36, Kelce, 37, and his two eldest children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte, during one of Swift’s June 2024 Eras Tour stop at London’s Wembley Stadium.

After host Graham Norton asked if the prince was aware of the significance of the backstage selfie, referring to the fact that it marked the first time the now-married Grammy winner and NFL star — who had begun dating in summer 2023 — appeared publicly in a photo together, William admitted to Norton, 63, that he was clueless at the time before ribbing Kelce a bit.

“I wasn’t until recently. I hadn’t appreciated the significance — and actually, I was trying to move him out of the photo,” joked William as the live audience laughed.

“But Travis kept coming back in, and I couldn’t work out why he kept coming back in,” he continued to joke. “I was trying to move him out so it was just me and Taylor and the children.”

Swift shared her backstage selfie from the June 21, 2024, concert with Kelce, William and William’s two eldest children — George, 13, and Charlotte, 11, whom he shares with wife Kate Middleton — on Instagram at the time.

“Happy Bday M8!” Swift wrote on Instagram, referencing Prince William’s birthday. “London shows are off to a splendid start 🇬🇧🇺🇸🤝.”

Another photograph of the backstage moment between Swift and the royals —without Kelce — was shared on the Prince and Princess of Wales’ official Instagram account. 

“Thank you @taylorswift for a great evening! #LondonTSTheErastour,” the post’s caption read.

William has been friends with Swift for more than a decade. In 2013, the Grammy winner performed at a charity evening for the homelessness charity Centrepoint, which the royal supports. He even joined her on stage alongside fellow guest Jon Bon Jovi to sing “Livin’ on a Prayer.”

The prince has also struck up a public friendship with Kelce, even appearing on the football pro’s popular New Heights podcast in an episode that dropped on July 3, the same day that the NFL star and singer wed in New York City.

William had teased that he may attend Swift and Kelce’s wedding months before the nuptials, though PEOPLE later reported that the prince would not be attending.

Swift and Kelce did, however, have a secret meeting with William and Princess Kate, 44, in London ahead of the wedding, PEOPLE previously confirmed. It’s believed to have been the first time Kate met the singer and NFL star.

For his surprise appearance on The Graham Norton Show, the Prince of Wales joined Cate Blanchett, Hannah Waddingham and conservationist Robert Irwin, all of whom are involved in The Earthshot Prize. The annual awards ceremony, which recognizes global leaders in environmental activism, is one of William’s major projects as a royal.

Elsewhere during the appearance, William revealed that he once had a “phase” that saw him pursue a career as a DJ. The prince drew laughs from the crowd and fellow guests by jokingly admitting, “I wasn’t very good.”
