Nearly 90 people were injured — including seven seriously — after a bus plummeted 65 feet off a mountain road in northeastern Spain.
On Sunday, Oct. 25, the bus was traveling on BV-5114 in Fogars de Monclús, about an hour’s drive northeast of Barcelona, when it veered off the roadway and plunged down a steep embankment, the Associated Press, Sky News and Spanish news agency EFE reported.
In response, the country’s emergency medical service dispatched 33 ambulances and three helicopters to treat 87 people, the agency said in an alert.
Seven people were in serious condition, while the remaining passengers were in “less serious” or “mild condition,” according to the translated statement.
Olga Pane, health minister of the Generalitat of Catalonia, confirmed to the AP that rescue teams continued to search the area to confirm that there were no other victims. Specialized mountain rescue crews had also been mobilized, the outlet reported.
Local police are now investigating whether the bus was carrying too many passengers who were standing at the time of the crash, EFE reported..
The bus driver tested negative for drugs and alcohol, a fire official told reporters, according to the news agency.
