NEED TO KNOW

  • Jack Carr shared in a conversation with PEOPLE that Chris Pratt has remained grounded throughout their nearly decade-long friendship
  • Pratt acquired rights to Carr’s debut novel before it was published in 2018
  • Both seasons of The Terminal List are now streaming on Prime Video

Chris Pratt might be one of Hollywood’s biggest stars, but according to The Terminal List co-creator Jack Carr, fame hasn’t changed who he is.

Ahead of the show’s season 2 premiere, Carr, who wrote the bestselling novels that inspired the Prime Video series, opened up to PEOPLE about his close friendship with Pratt, 47, and revealed what might surprise fans about the actor.

“Maybe [it’s surprising] that he’s so grounded being so well known all around the world, just how normal he is,” Carr said. “He’s just a normal person who happens to have this job that puts him on screens for people all around the world.”

Carr, who also serves as an executive producer on the action thriller, has worked closely with Pratt for nearly a decade, dating back to when the actor first acquired the rights to his debut novel.

“We got to be great friends over these last few years. He optioned the book before it even hit shelves,” Carr recalled. “So he optioned it in early January of 2018. The book hit shelves in March. So, yeah, we’ve been on this journey for quite some time together.”

And while Pratt has become a household name thanks to his roles in Guardians of the Galaxy, Jurassic World and Parks and Recreation, Carr said the actor remains the same down-to-earth person behind the scenes.

“He’s what you see. He’s a good, solid guy, funny, kind, caring,” Carr said. “And being number one on the call sheet. All of that filters down across the entire cast and crew and makes it a really positive experience for everybody.”

Carr even joked about what the actor is like when the cameras aren’t rolling.

“Oh, yeah, when the cameras turn off, he’s just a nasty, nasty person,” he quipped, before quickly clarifying, “That is not true. That is not true at all.”

Pratt, meanwhile, reflected on how his career has evolved from playing lovable comedic characters to taking on more intense, action-packed roles.

“I feel like I’m living Andy Dwyer/Burt Macklin’s wet dream,” he told PEOPLE, referencing his fan-favorite Parks and Recreation character and his FBI agent alter ego. “I’m making movies that they would love.”

While Pratt said he finds both genres rewarding, he admitted that leading a dramatic series comes with different responsibilities.

“I love comedy. I love the improv nature that I got to have on Parks and Rec,” he explained. “It’s kind of hard to, the beauty of playing a supporting character in Parks and Rec was I didn’t have to carry a lot of the emotional weight of the storylines.”

“And so as I’ve moved into a show like this where I’m the central character, it kind of narrows the ropes inside of which you’re allowed to play,” he continued. “It wouldn’t make sense for me to do some weird joke as James Reece avenging the death of my family.”

Still, Pratt insisted he enjoys both sides of his career.

As for Carr, the author said reuniting with the cast and crew for season 2 felt like a celebration after years of working together.

“We got to be such good friends over the last few years, particularly this season, filming around the world, South Africa, Canada, Morocco,” he told PEOPLE. “Yeah, we all just got to know each other even better than we did before. And so, it’s like a reunion. It’s a celebration tonight.”

The upcoming season arrives four years after the show’s 2022 debut, with Carr attributing the lengthy wait to the Hollywood strikes and Pratt’s busy schedule.

“Then there’s someone you may have heard of named Chris Pratt who has scheduled about two years out on things,” Carr joked. “So he has commitments already.”

Despite the delay, Carr expressed hope that fans won’t have to wait quite as long for future installments.

“Hopefully it’s not going to be as long going forward for what comes next,” he said.
