Minnegasco have released their debut album, The Studio Audience, featuring The Shins frontman James Mercer on lead vocals across two tracks, ‘Livin’ in France’ and ‘Tar Mazzan’. The 12-track record brings together hook-driven indie pop, folk and post-punk, with sharp political commentary and an independent spirit.

Rather than a brief guest appearance, Mercer takes centre stage on both tracks, marking a notable collaboration between the established indie rock frontman and the independent project led by songwriter Jon Forrest Little and creative partner Dru Arstark.

The partnership has its roots in a longstanding musical connection through the late Neal Langford, an original member of The Shins who also played with Little’s band, Church Camp. Langford helped reconnect Mercer and Little before his death, and the pair eventually met backstage in Pittsburgh on 3 September 2022, during The Shins’ Oh, Inverted World20th-anniversary tour. Their conversation led to plans to record together at Mercer’s Portland studio.

Across The Studio Audience, Minnegasco balance melodic immediacy with pointed storytelling. Highlights include ‘Measly’, a dream-pop take on class struggle; ‘Pipsqueak’, a hard-edged critique of war profiteering; and ‘Bow & Arrow, the Untold Story of Lozen’, which draws on the story of Apache warrior and healer Lozen. ‘Holly’s Dresses’ adds a burst of power pop, while the album also features a cover of The Beatles’ ‘I’m Looking Through You’.

The record includes contributions from Langford on bass and guest vocals from the late Bernadette Seacrest, adding further weight to a project shaped by friendship, loss and creative collaboration.

Explaining the album’s title, Little says, “The album title hits at how easily people follow along with absurdities as long as the prompt tells them to clap or laugh.”

Operating from Aztec, New Mexico, Minnegasco take their name from the now-defunct Minneapolis Gas Company, bringing together indie pop, folk and alt-country with a post-punk edge. The Studio Audience is out now, with Mercer’s contributions providing a prominent thread through a record that remains firmly rooted in the duo’s independent vision.
