- Shirley Ballas had some harsh criticism for her 2003 cameo in Gilmore Girls
- The pro dancer told Extra that the dialogue between Emily and Rory Gilmore about her had some errors, particularly when it came to her dance style

Shirley Ballas had a harsh score for her 2003 Gilmore Girls cameo.
During an interview with Extra following her guest judge appearance on the Tuesday, Oct. 27 episode of Dancing with the Stars, the champion ballroom dancer, 66, took a look back at a scene in Gilmore Girls — from the episode “Ballrooms and Biscotti” — that showed Emily Gilmore (Kelly Bishop) telling her granddaughter Rory (Alexis Bledel) all about Shirley and her husband, fellow dancer Corky.
As the characters watch some ballroom dancing on TV, Emily tells Rory, “Oh, look! The couple in the purple feathers, that’s Corky and Shirley Ballas — I love them. They are so talented.”
“Corky’s actually writing a musical based on their life as ballroom champions and their son, Corky Jr., is going to play him as a young man,” she continues, before Rory deadpans, “Wow, two Corkys in one show, you don’t see that every day.”

Although Shirley smiled as she watched the clip, she quickly shared some notes that she would have given the showrunners back in 2003.
“Well, that’s very interesting because as she’s saying, ‘Corky and Shirley doing ballroom dancing,’ they’re actually showing a quickstep, and we never danced waltz, foxtrot, tango or quickstep — we danced the Latin dances: Cha-cha, rumba, samba, paso doble and jive,” the pro dancer shared. “So that’s really interesting.”

“And the fact that Corky was writing a musical?” she added. “I don’t know where she got that from, but that never happened.”
“And Corky Jr.? The little one, Mark? Yeah, cute,” Shirley added, referring, of course, to Mark Ballas — a pro dancer on DWTS, where he’s won three Mirrorball trophies.
Both Mark Alexander “Corky” Sr. and Shirley competed as ballroom dancers after meeting in the mid-1980s, and the couple won several championship titles together before divorcing in 2007.
The pair have also trained many DWTS pros over the years, including siblings Julianne and Derek Hough, and Corky has even competed on the show twice alongside his son, per Parade. Mark also got to enjoy a similar experience with Shirley when his mom joined him as a judge on the spinoff series, Dancing with the Stars: The Next Pro.
“[It’s] great. Just another day in the office for me,” Mark told PEOPLE in July of working alongside the Strictly Come Dancing star. “She’s trained me my whole life, and … whenever I want a very straight, honest, direct opinion about my own work, that’s the first call I make, you know?”
